Coconut palms at Royal Hawaiian Hotel - Waikiki

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to share this pic of some of the Cocos nucifera palms that are at the famous pink Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Waikiki, Honolulu, Hawaii. Notice the colorful flowers planted at the base of each palm. Are any of you guys doing something similar? If so, how about posting a pic and share your ideas. (Two grandchildren in foreground)

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

Very nice. Are the palms trimmed, or are the crowns just umbrella shaped because they're Pacific talls? I think that would be a pretty nice accent to try when I plant my coconut palms in the ground. Do you know any of the flower types that they use? Also possibilities are Boston ferns, Sea Oats, or Beach Dune Sunflowers.

Keith, I'm sure they trim the palms occasionally if only to remove coconut fruit from forming and spent leaves from falling on people below.

Wal, sorry no close up pics of the flowers planted at the base of those Cocos palms, however, they were Impatiens.
