Adonidia merrillii 'Gold Form'

Recommended Posts

Seeds from a friend on the EPS forum. 4 months growth. Anyone in SoCal growing the golden form? Does either form grow well outdoors? Not sure if that is variegation going on to the left, but it runs the full length of the leaf. These will green up a little more, so I have my eye on it!

Too bad!

They grow here though.... I have a few (sent by a good friend from Palmtalk :)), bigger than yours now. I just potted them up to 200mm. I might plant a few this wet season if I can find a shady spot...

Thanks, Ari. I am USDA zone 11a, so I've high hopes for growing these as indoor palms, at least. Do you grow any of the variegated type?

I had one planted once, during the drought days and too little shade, lasted half a season from memory. Those seedlings look healthy John, what are your plans for those, and also that variegated one :)

edit: I see your post now, going indoors.

Happy Gardening

Wal, the golden one needs shade. I made that mistake too... :(

John, no variegated one, unfortunately... Fast growing for me too.

I've read they can be invasive in the tropics. Do you have that problem Ari?

No.... not here. Nothing can be as invasive as Carpies though...

Adonidias grow well here but many were fried last winter. They are quite cold sensitive, need heat and lots of humidity. Keep yellow/variegated ones in shade. I have a variegated one I keep on the lanai under shadecloth. I hesitate to plant it because I'd hate to lose such an expensive palm to a freeze. As long as they have heat and humidity they are happy campers.

I wish I could germinate seed like you John. Here is an update of mine, with a v. v. fast moving spear.

My variegated Adonidia just pushed a new leaf. It's doing well in my lanai with a few hours of direct sun per day.

Sweet palm, JD.....i like them when the variegation is more pronounced, but more to the yellow and Adonidias just look sickly, imo.

Ya, mine has thin stripes throughout, instead of patches of variegation. It hasn't been fertilized in a while.. the striping shows up better when the leaves are greener..

Superb variegation, JD. Here's a photo of a pure yellow new leaf on my seedling

very nice Kumar. it takes a special collector to appreciate the 'golden adonidia' as most common folk think it looks sickly, or deficient. the lemon-yellow new leaves are way cool IMO!

Where is everyone getting the golden and variegated seed? I would love to have some of both.

New Leaf from my seedling, taken in Feb - I was surprised it lost no speed in putting this one out in the dry winter. As you can see and compare with the earlier photo above, its finally becoming pinnate
