Hiking with Pele

My friend Cindy and I walked out to view the lava ocean entry.

I've never been to the newer lava flows before so I took a lot of photos!!

I'm still "processing" my shots, so they are not going to be in order... so much for the "log" part of the travel log.

This is looking towards Pu'u O'o.... uh oh!

Looking towards Pu'u 'O 'o again ... I think this flow is from 1983. (I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong!

We had to stop here because it was getting pretty active! We wanted to go to the main entry but as you can see there is steam that was just a few yards away. This lava is about a week old.

Nice pictures! I remember that flow in 83. We had just moved to Opihikao from Maui and the flow was just starting to come down into Royal Gardens-everything else was still there-Black Sand Beach, stores, neighborhoods, forests etc. Now I look at the pictures and its hard to comprehend that it is all gone.

From my kitchen window at night, if I saw the sky lit up red, then I would know that the volcano was going off and my husband and I would throw the kids in the van and head on down there to see it. I don't know if the flows were larger/moving faster back then, but you would be on the road by the ocean and see this huge flow slowing moving down amongst the trees and hear the trees exploding and burning up from the heat of the flow-before the lava had even touched the trees, the heat was that great. Even though it is sad to know that that area is gone (one of my kids learned to swim on one of the beaches that is gone now), it was a very memorable time.

Love the intense blue hues in the photos Angela and the contrast with the black is beautiful.

We're lucky to live close enough,(but not too close), to be able to run down to see the flows when active.

Geologically still a very young place.

This is what stopped us from getting closer to the main ocean entry!

Great photography Angela, it looks like you two girls had an awesome hike! Where did ya'll begin your hike and which direction you go?

Hey Angela, you really did get some great picture shots that day! The beach we ended up at, with the week old lava, was Fox's Landing. It is cool though, that so far Pele has moved the sand to the other side, of where the old black sand was, so she left everyone a little beach! This is a great hike!

I am glad you had a fun hike as well! Aloha, Cindy

It seems to me

You lived your hike

with Cindy in the wind

Nice pics, I like these Hawaii pics where you can get the blue ocean, the black lava and the green trees in the one photo.

Happy Gardening

We started from Kalapana side and walked to the end of the trail then just kept walking south west until you hit a ledge of an old flow and there's a trail that starts again there that goes to Fox's Landing.
