Are they all Billbergia, Gonzer? I have to say... I don't have many of them and I was never that interested in them. But now that you showed the colours... I might have to investigate some more...

Yes they are all Bills Ari. Right click the photo and hit properties. The hybrid name is listed at the end right before "jpg". They don't take up a lot of space since they grow upright.

Love those colors and patterns! These are such easy plants to grow, I don't know why we don't see them more often.

By the way, those lovely bills you sent me are thriving and multiplying -- thanks for helping make my garden more beautiful! (The name tags faded to white -- can't read them anymore.)

Gonz, I have that second one. I have found these grow great with no soil. Plant them in the ground and they rot out in winter. I am just getting into Broms, so learning as I go.

Len,

Don't go into broms... It is a bottomless pit!! You thought palm was bad!! It is way too late for me.... The only thing that stops me at the moment is the fact that I have no shade... Once I do, I will be very dangerous!!

Ari,

No shade didn't stop me! I just planted sun-loving ones until my shade grew in! The Aechmea blanchettianas can take full sun all day and have a great orange color. And they are large enought that the falling coconuts don't hurt them. There are also somesmaller sun-lovers that I've planted to help fill in. And of course tree trunks are great for growing them as well as old pieces of wood I find. I've even planted themon rocks to keep them dry.

Yeah... me too. I have a few aechmea, but my favourite is actually Vriesea which is a challenge to grow in Darwin, I heard. But, I will grow them... you'll wait and see... lol. I have been very good though, only buy what I can plant or keep in the shadehouse...

Len, when you're in the area next time stop by.

Ari, just as with collecting any family of plants that often require shade...canopy! I started with easy, fast growers like Schizolobium and bananas. Shade houses came next. Bananas were thinned and other good stuff planted. Pretty soon you find yourself using the neighbor's yard. If you affliction gets to be too much I'm sure there is a 12-step chapter of Bromaholics Anonymous near you.

Here's another; Bill. 'Darth Vader'. I used this plant to make a cross with Bill. 'Pink Champagne' and the plants show real good promise. Naming it will be even more fun.

Rusty, you are one lucky guy. If I lived that close to Michael's I'd be broke. He's the only source I buy my non-tillandsias from due to his plants size and vigor. Hopefully I'll be able to give some of my hybrids soon for him to sell.

Ditto on the going broke, but what a nice way to get there! :) I get there about 4 times a year after saving a wad of cash...plus i work for and orchid and brom grower so my place is filling up.

Keep us informed if you do retail your crosses through Michael, I'd like to get some of them.

Will any of those grow here in my garden? I'm really liking any pink, yellow, orange, and dark plum plants this year. Nice since I can't drink coffee!

Hi Gonzer, I've finally decided to dive into Bromeliads and have been reading some of the older threads. All I'm getting from your post here is; "This image or video has been moved or deleted" photobucket. Any chance these images are still available somewhere? Sounds like they were impressive.

Thanks,

Susan
