Breaching Right Whale lands on Yacht

Couldn't resist this one.

It is what it looks like. That whale landed partially on that boat and broke the mast. No one, including the whale was hurt.

Still, quite a bit of excitement for the people in the boat, and the observers who took the picture.

Freaky.

I once accidentally hooked a pilot whale in the back while trolling a lure.

The whole pod circled the yacht and I was rather worried until the lure pulled free and they relaxed and sounded again.

They are too large to ignore.

The shadows don't look right to me....also, the whale is breaching well aft in the photo and all of the damage is at the mast. Also, I am not sure the the hull of a 33 foot sailboat would survive such a smack.

No one got hurt in this? Not believable.

The photos of the damage are not convincing to me.....something else happened.

Not a very good job at photoshopping. They should have done it on a high resolution image and then shrunk it afterwards. This looks like it was done on a low resolution image, hence the poor quality of the job.

photoshop for sure, look at the skipper, just sailing along, another carefree day on the cool blue, no worries.

Wal, thats what I was thinking! No way can a whale be breeching right next to your boat and you are just staring straight ahead. Any one would be looking at the whale at this point-its instinctive.

And doesn't it strike you odd that somebody happened to be in exactly the right place at the right time with their camera in focus and ready for action...:hmm:

Looking at the later damage photos, it just looks like a broken mast. That whale would have done a hell of a lot more damage!

CNN says it's the real thing! This morning they had a story about the incident & they showed video of the damaged boat at the dock. Perfect example of the wrong place at the wrong time.

This is the real deal! I seen it on LA, Ca. ABC tv news! They had a short interview of the lady on board. They mentioned there was $5,000.00 in damage to the boat and the whale left some blubber on the boat. It happened to a local boat a few years back killing the owner of the boat.

I watched the interview and in my opinion they are being truthfull. The photo says "Courtesty of Paloma Werner", who was on the Intrepid. So, that's weird. Maybe someone gave her the photo and she forwarded it onto the media.

The real question is why hasn't this happened before?

Whales breach all the time, and sometimes near boats. I suspect (desperately hope!) that they're smart and careful enough to want to avoid an accident, too.

Boy, I hate to say this, but . . .

Like various other horrors in the world, past and present? Were they photoshopped? Tell me, how do you decide? What particular criteria do you use? I'm really curious, because I do get snookered once in a while, though not this time.

Boy, I hate to say this, but . . .

Like 9-11? Was that photo-shopped?

That would be a trick as it was covered live on several live feeds nationally......not the same thing. I watched it happen....it was shocking.

This link has a vidio of the same whale verses sailboat that you have seen in pics! Also some other neet whale stuff!

I liked the video of the beached dead whale they blew up!

Facinating really.

Randy

BTW Dave while I was on a sailboat racing at night we felt a big bump and the boat shuttered when we hit something big!

Boats and wildlife clash often.

test

A video has arisden that shows the collision from a distance. It is very shaky, sometimes the boat goes out of view but would be indicative of a video shot from a boat at sea.

I may be changing my mind on whether its a photoshopped picture. The person who shot this video would have to have gone through editing techniques that would have been very rigorous in order to support the famous photo....

Randy,

You are making it difficult for me to decide whether it is a fake or not. Especially since I am soending more time on it than my interest supports.

I love the reporting too, sometimes it is a 40 foot whale, sometimes it is a 40 ton whale,...it is pretty clear that it is neither.

I declare it fake and let the chips, or whales for that matter, fall where they may.

Film was on Aus ABC news last night. Not one piece of evidence mentioned though on who took the video and why they were taking the video at that time. The news reader read the report like it was straight from the internet. I think she said something like this

"Amazing shots as a whale leapt out of the water and smashed into a yacht...blah blah"

and nothing else about "who" "why" "when" , your basic journo elements of reporting, I know what those are, I'm an aussie ratpack reporter you see.. :D speaking of which, we are so overdue for some action... :(

Basically I remain sceptical on the fish tale...

Goddamn, you are a skeptical bunch.

I'll submit that knee-jerk skepticism deserves the same discredit as knee-jerk acceptance.

I mean, if you can identify a specific reason why the film is fake, give it to us.

Otherwise, well.

Fake or not this stuff happens and get caught on film and pics frequently now that alot of people carry cameras with them all the time! Cell phones! Fish and boaters clash from time to time. Sometimes with deadly results for the fisherman or the casual boater! Fisherman have been speared to death by spearfish that they were trying to catch leap on board! A 17 year old boy got slammed by a very large marlin while straped into the fighting chair and got hurt badly about 2 years ago.!

Dave, That happened several years ago where the owner of a Skipjack fishing boat got breached by a whale and killed. I remember he was a black man. The boat was badly damaged.

So since this can happen and I have seen the video, pics and interview of the gal on board(three different sources by the way) I believe it to be true!
