Took some pics at both my next door neighbours gardens. One side is exclusive to the planting of Archontophoenix alexandrea, whilst on the other side it's more diverse.

Alexander palm neighbour makes you an alexander believer all over again, they were superb with some fat bases, reminiscent of that fabled variation the beatricea.

My Butia paraguayenesis surrounded by Caladium "Miss Muppet". This palm is not done justice by photographs and is very pretty in person, the powder blue petioles combine well with the caladiums.

CIMG1025.jpg

My Dypsis decipiens. It lost its spear this winter when it was very cold (around 20) but has done well otherwise!

CIMG1031.jpg

Here is a tropical bed I have been working on. It has Kerriodoxa elegans, Chambys, Lytocaryums, and some Chameadoreas. I dug them up when it got below 25 this past winter because of how long it was cold here. Its a push getting these to grow in a 9a climate but I think in their present location which is a good microclimate they will survive.

Thanks Wal, I really love that maroon vesty. Looks like you acquired some nice orange ones. I've got a couple

of orange ones, not particularly fast at this point. Most of their energy seems to be spent on developing fat

trunk bases.

Beautiful place Carl, so nice and tidy. Looks so serene.

Is that a hookeri Daryl? Pretty intense color, even the main veins in the pinnae look red.

(I'm not sure what the correct name is for that). Has it gotten more intense the older it's

gotten?

Tim

Hilo, Hawaii

  • Author

Hi Tim, yes it's a hookeri. The leaves have been vivid red for as long as I can remember. I think even when it was quite small it was very red. It has about 10ft of trunk so it is hard to remember back that far!
