Landsendt Sub-tropical gardens, Auckland New Zealand

Here is a video for all of you who want to know what we can grow down here in NZ.

I shot this in May 2009 at Landsendt in Auckland New Zealand. Landsendt is a property owned by the Endt family since 1962, and was used for exotic fruit horticulture for many years. Today it has around 6 acres of Sub-Tropical gardens with a large focus on Palms and Cycads.

Many will know this garden well.

Thanks for posting Michael. What an amazing garden. Very good job filming and editing it too. At one point I felt like a bee flying towards that Strelitzia flower. The filming style certainly had you guessing what would come next. Those Geonoma's and Ceroxylons are amazing, as well as all those healthy Nikaus. The Bromeliads, were they Alacantarea imperialis with those huge tall flowers? I'm going to put a few of them around my garden.

Best regards

Tyrone

Hi Jason,

I have just added a comment on your site.

Dick the founder of the gardens has recently written a book tracking the beginings of the gardens to present day with many photos of the plants being collected in habitat in South America. More info can be found here: Landsendt book

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

No Michael, friday was our first night below freezing, -1.5, not cold enough for frost to come up to my place, but there was a bit in the park opposite me. Everything is still pushing up spears actually, even some of the tropical stuff, so I don't know whats happening. I didnt get a frost worth mentioning last year so hopefully this year will be the same. I had some big queens removed and couple of tipuanas taken out as well as some big things cut right back so if I get a frost its going to make a mess !!
