Roadtrip to the Living Desert in Palm Desert

Recommended Posts

I took a one day roadtrip to the Living Desert reserve in Palm Desert California. It is a two hour drive from San Diego which I like to visit every couple of years. It is a collection of plants and animals from all the deserts around the world, a fantastic place if you are in So Cal and have not been there. They also have a nature trail for five miles up a canyon where you can see lots of native wildlife. Here are a few photos from my trip, wish I could post many more but this is a taste.

I caught this Chuckwalla on the nature walk, he is a juvenile. These Iguanoids get pretty large and are fairly docile.

And the holy grail, the largest and one of the only Livistona carinensis growing in the U.S. or outside of their habitat. This one is 20 years old.

Rivers love water, they must have some irrigation system going on.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

Yeh Bill, I occasionally get out. There is alot to see at the Living Desert and I plan on going back this summer, my son and nephew had a great time. If I was alone or with palm people I would have a lot more plant photos, they have a great collection out there, but my son hates plants so I was limited.

That's crazy, especially considering that they grow in swamps in their native habitat

Thanks for sharing, i hope to visit there someday. The Ravenea rivularis are beautiful.

I visited there several years ago and it is a great spot. Those Ravenas look very healthy and they must be fast growers because I do not remember them. I got a great book there titled North American Deserts. Thank you for the shots.
