A few Cyrtostachys renda photos

Last night I was walking back from the beach after sunset and took a few photos of one of our larger C. renda. The flash really shows the silvery undersides of the leaves.

Lipstick Palm envy is a terrible thing Jeff. I was walking past the greenhouse just a minute ago, and shot my Lipstick Palm seedlings against the night sky. Venus was twinkling, but didn't come out. Two-leafers! Sorry for the blurry photo.

John,

I know what you mean by lipstick palm envy. I have three 3 leaf seedlings here :( and I am just dying to get a large clump to plant outside.

Great shots Jeff. You need to send a few clums of those palms here for me  .

Thanks Laura, and you living in the Caribbean. I feel better now. I won't ever be able to plant mine out, but in pots I think I have a chance.

Paul - I saw that shiny bottle palm. We did a thread about palms in space a couple of years ago, and I wrote to NASA about getting a Pigafetta into orbit. They didn't reply.

Sorry Jeff, make that two clumps for me too. :)

Wow, I posted this and then forgot about it...

This clump of C. renda got nailed by a tree that was leaning out over top of it. You can see a branch from the tree in the first photo. When the tree came down on June 1st, it smashed half of the clump. It's still making a recovery and I posted some photos of it not long ago on a different post.

Rodrigo, I don't have much experience with seedlings. I germinated some a couple years ago and they are still small seedlings today. They seem very slow at that stage. Since they are inexpensive here, it's easier to buy them at a larger size. They seem to thrive in different types of soils, but they need constant water to look good.

Thanks for the post Jeff. I hope they recover well from their trauma.

Hi Rodrigo,

I'm far from Brazil but also admire this palm. I wish you great success.

I've managed to keep 7/12 seedlings alive indoors for over a year now, There's no way they'll ever survive outdoors here but they seem to be responding to a lot of TLC.

I have one in a ceramic pot and the other 6 in a single plastic pot. The pots have large drain holes and sit in deep plastic saucers.

I water them twice daily and aspirate the excess water from the saucers practically daily. They get occasional light fertilizer.

They seemed to be struggling but after adding artificial fluorescent light they appear to be doing better.

They are currently illuminated 24 hours a day with fluorescent light. All 7 appear to be growing albeit slowly.

I think the biggest risk will be on our cold winter days when the heated air really dries out. Wish me luck.

Rodrigo, I haven't grown them from seed. I bought a small plant intending to put it in the ground. Meantime I put the whole put in a plastic icecream container. full of water. The irrigation system keeps the icecream container full of water, about a third of the way up the pot. It's been sitting there like that for over 2 years now (OK, I've been busy!).. It's still looking good without me having done anything. Now you've reminded me that I have to plant it out ............. when I get some spare time.

They are SO SLOW as seedlings, that is why they are so expensive still even when they are not rare. The growers have to hold on to them for a long time before they can sell them, unless of course you are in Costa Rica :winkie: . I have a few planted now and I wouldn't mind more... They are so beautiful!! I have 2 getting to decent size now, the biggest one is about my height now (1.6m - I am short... lol). For me, they are easy to grow as long as I provide enough watering in the dry season.

Zig,

I have planted the 2 that I got from that place at Humpty Doo. I wish I had bought more though... Hey, should catch up again when you have time!!

Regards, Ari :)

HELLO FRIENDS.

AS SAID, I LIVE IN BRAZIL, SÃO PAULO.

HERE THE CLIMATE IS TROPICAL AND THE TEMPERATURE, IN MEDIUM, 25 DEGREES CELSIUS.

I BOUGHT SOME SEEDLINGS BY EBAY THAT HAVE DIED DUE TO LACK OF MOISTURE, BECAUSE HERE IN SAO PAULO THE WEATHER IS A LITTLE DRY.

AFTER THIS, I BOUGHT ANOTHER BATCH. WHEN THE SELLER HAS BEEN INFORMED THAT I WOULD KEEP THE PLANTS WITHIN A PLASTIC BAG AND SHADOW. SO, THEY WOULD NEED TO MOISTURE AND TEMPERATURE IDEAL. TOLD ME ALSO THAT SHOULD AVOID EXPOSURE TO SUN, DIRATI, AS IT IS NEW SEEDLINGS.

THE CYRTOSTACHYS RENDA IS A GREAT RARITY HERE IN BRAZIL. SO, I`M BYING SEEDS FROM RAREPALMSEEDS, BECAUSE THE PRICE IS GOOD ATTRACTIVE. SO, I HAVE TRIED GERMINATE KIND, BUT NOT SURE WHAT WILL I HAVE THE RESULT.

I HAVE MADE SEVERAL PALM SEEDLINGS, AS BISMARCK NOBILIS, MEDEMIA ARGUN, WASHINGTONIA FURIFERA, BEAUCARNEA RECURVATA, CHAMBEYRONIA MACROCARPA, BLUE LATAM, YELLO LATAM, ROYSTONEA REGIA, RAVENALA MADASCARIENSE, WODYETIA BIFURCATE, YUCCA, AND OTHERS.

GOOD FRIENDS, HOW YOU WERE SO THOUGHTFUL AND REALLY HELPED ME, I FEEL NO DUTY TO MAKE ME.

IN FACT, HOLDS THE POSITION OF CHIEF POLICE OFFICERS BRAZIL. MY COUNTRY IS FULL OF SOCIAL PROBLEMS IMPACTING CRIMINAL ACTION. IN THE END, JUST BEING A SINGLE PIECE OF A HUGE SYSTEM VICIOUS, JUST WHAT I GET DISCOURAGED, BECAUSE EVEN IF YOU DO EVERYTHING TO MY RANGE, NO END SOCIAL HAS LITTLE EFFECT. I AM SORRY FOR OUTBURST ...

BUT IN FACT, WHAT I REALLY HAVE GIVEN ME JOY IN THE LAST TIME IS THE CULTURE OF ORNAMENTAL PALM TREES AND OTHER PLANTS. I'M THINKING TO OPEN A GARDEN CENTER AND GO OUT OF THE POLICE. THE FUTURE SAY MY WAY.

THANK YOU ALL AND CONTAINS ME.

RODRIGO.

In Malaysia they have a lot of Cyrtostachys planted in gardens as ornamentals. And sometimes you see them in the wild in swampforests. For the Chinese people there the red color means luck so thats why its populair I guess.

If you want seeds I guess that part of the world is the best place to look.

Thanks Michael, that is a sight for a sore back.

Yes folks, that's my renda, thought it best be growing a few hundred miles up the road, in Tully actually. It's like a pen pal, or pen palm. One day I'll be back for another visit, bring my toy cars with me too, might even say hello to Michael while I'm there..
