Howdyall:

A while back, I bared my 'puter travails, and got some good, sage advice, and a new computer back last September, with about 800 GB of memory, about 400 times the memory of my old 'puter.

Whoa.

800-expetive times. Yike.

So, it came with Windows 7, and well, it's been a few months.

For sure, Windows 7 smokes smokily and moves so fast I gag sometimes.

On the other hand, sometimes it fails to start, leaving the black screen, and forcing a reboot.

And, it won't take my printers well. It airily refuses to acknowledge the existence of the trusty Brother 1440.

And, it eats my pictures! :( (Saves them to a directory I can't find, which I know I can do something about but it's the principle of the thing . . . .)

I will, at some point, partition the hard drive and install Linux, report to follow.

One thing that is good, is that I haven't had to buy any new programs, which I'm really giving the arm to our 'puter lady at the office about. (Our office system! Slower than molasses in June in the Southern Hemisphere, and Congress, Parliament and the respective Diets in a series of dithers).

Now that I'm the webmaster of the PSSC, that extra speed helps. (Dude! That horse cart ain't makin' it on the 101 . . .. )

No.

Too much money. I just don't like expensive paper weights. Or door stops. Etc.

Having what amounts to two computers (plus the included software)in one should cost a little more - not to mention that the Mac laptop would be half the weight of your typical PC paperweight. Two laptops in one at at half the weight of either...........

But the nicest thing is no anti-virus software, no malware software, no "black screens," and complete idiot proof one touch backup is pretty nice too. And I won't even mention having the laptop, desktop, and iPhone all automatically synced no matter what machine I do anything on, and no matter where I do it - all wirelessly and seamlessly. So you're right, you get what you pay for. And you don't get what you don't pay for.

But all in all Windows 7 is pretty good. Too bad the hardware it usually runs on is so "clunky."

I got a new laptop for Christmas. It is an HP wide screen with a lot of bells and whistles, including Bluetooth and Blueray. I can use it as a media center. It has Windows 7 and is a 64-bit machine and it smokes! I use it wirelessly with my new wireless printer.

I did have a couple of issues with my old camera software but was able to dowload the newer drivers from the Canon website and now it works just fine. I was unable to install a really old printer - no drivers available for it - but other than that I have had no problems with it.

I love the laptop! It has a 17 3/4 inch screen and a separate number key pad for entering data into Excel. I also like the fact that the touchpad can be turned off and on with a button right on the keyboard. I don't like touchpads.

I am very pleased with my new laptop and Windows 7.

Generally, things have gone well, but there's no new driver for my Canon camera, which has caused some problems. The biggest thing is that the software will not let you download images after they've already been downloaded. This is a problem because i downloaded some pictures over the weekend, and now I cannot find them on my hard drive (even after a search), and the system won't let me download them again. The software for setting up where things get downloaded is lame and hard to use, especially its tendency to stick things in unexpected places.

If you have any thoughts, I'd sure appreciate any suggestions.

Windows 7 should auto-detect any popular camera connected to it and install drivers by itself. The first thing I would do is uninstall the software - you don't need it!

Once the software is gone, a pop-up screen should come up which asks you what you want to do. Just choose "view files & folders" and drag and drop the photos to where you want to store them. The software makes a simple task a big project.

I upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 on my laptop. I've never had any problems with either OS.
