Within the last week or so the weather has turned and we are getting 50s by day and 30s by night so I uncovered my two palms that I have protected. Minimum temperature here in Wisconsin was -1F this winter. Received about 45 inches of snow over the course of the winter with about 80 daytime maximum temperatures below freezing.

First palm, trachycarpus fortunei:

Second palm, washingtonia robusta:

I think the trunk got really fat over the winter on the robusta. I wonder what would cause the trunk to fatten up over winter. Here is a picture from last fall.

Thanks for looking.

I don't know. They haven't said anything. Maybe they don't want to talk to the "crazy" guy?

What hasn't killed them has made them stronger, faster, fitter, and altogether better. You are one committed palm nut who deserves a big applause.

I think I'm going to go and plant a lipstick palm, with a 500W heater and computer controlled weather modifier. :D

Well done.

Yes, scream away! :)

Great palms Tim! Have you considered planting a Rhapidophyllum hystrix, needle palm?

I'm not a fan of "bushy" palms. I like tropical looking ones. But maybe I'd try one unprotected. :)

So no light all that time?

No, they had light through a plastic south window. I took the foam off during the day and put it back on at night. Got free heat that way too with the sun.

Oh and, what if I put one in like a flower box on my deck year round, but it wasn't planted?? Would a windmill palm be fine without protection?

Solid zone 9, I can expect at least one night in the mid to low twenties every year.

No, I'm sorry it would not. The roots would freeze and the air temperature is definitely too cold. You need protection in WI.

Oh and I forgot to bring in my Sago palm in last night. It got down to the mid 20's + snow.... minimal damage but this is a bad thing for me!

Amazing! Your Washingtonia looks great compared to mine. Mine are taller and therefore not as much ground warmth "protection"...but how much residual heat is in a Wisconsin end of winter ground? Both of mine lost all but 1-2 leaves out of a dozen or so. Our lows were low 20's for several nights, with quite a few freezes. Maybe I'll ship my Pinangas north to you...
