Jokes aside, I'm not aware of any quakes taking place in or around Florida, though Haiti was very close.

On the other hand, I suspect it's not too far off to imagine a quake or volcanic eruption causing one.

Anyone know?

There was a 6.0 earthquake in the gulf not too long ago, but it was too weak for a tsunami. That being said, it was the strongest quake in the gulf for 33 years, and a highly unusual occurrence, so it won't happen on my coast.

There is the thing about the imminent landslide off the canary islands that would hit the east coast, so maybe. Hopefully not though

It's only slightly more likely than the chile earthquake actually shifting the earth off it's axis.

This link has some information about the possible mega tsunami that may happen and destroy the entire east coast of the USA. Canary Island Mega Tsunami I saw a program on TV some years ago about this subject. 18 feet would do no good in this case.

Don, I think I saw the same program. I would have to imagine that a 150' Tsunami would go right over Florida.

Well that is an interesting thought, but, what evidence is there that this actually happened?

The odds of a giant tsunami hitting the East coast of the USA are pretty remote in our lifetimes, but the chance of a cat 5 hurricane making a direct hit on Miami and then going up the East coast is much more likely, and that could happen any year. I fear what would happen to the tall skyscrapers that have sprung up in Miami with 165 MPH winds. It's happened before and it will happen again.

I experienced the wall cloud of hurricane Cleo in 1964 which made a direct hit on Miami, and it was a cat 2. It also went up the east coast of Fla. I never want to experience anything like that again.

Dave,

There have been all kinds of major natural disasters in Earth´s history. The USGS, USGS on Volcanic landslides, says that they have and they will happen again. And, that tsunamis are produced if the volcano slides rapidly down into the ocean with enough mass. The Canary Island possiblity would be enough mass to produce a massive wave and impact.

Regarding the Amazon tidal bore, I have not seen it personally. But, people do surf it. It is a long way from where I am, about 1,200 miles to be exact.

Hmm.

You do have a point. The one I remember reading about is the explosion of Santorini about 3,500 years ago, right around the time of the Israelite Exodus from Egypt. Indeed, the plagues described are spot on with a colossal volcanic eruption.

And, the ashflows ran across the ocean to Crete, more than 100 miles away, and wasted Minoan civilization.

I keep forgetting how huge the Amazon is . . . . .

I saw something a few years ago about if a super tsunami was created when that Canary Island volcano erupts and slides into the sea. The wave wouldn't sweep across FL but it would come inland in central FL about 25 miles. But it would devastate from Nova Scotia along the eastern coast to the Caribbean and the coast of northern South America.

If something happens on or near the east side of the Atlantic, the Bahamas form a tsunami shield for southern Florida. The Bahamas and western Cuba have few, if any, earthquakes. Eastern Cuba doesn't seem a likely tsunami source.

Florida has suffered occasional rogue waves, including one at Daytona Beach that damaged about 3 dozen vehicles parked on the beach. Here's a National Weather Service Power Point presentation on Florida tsunami risk: www.srh.noaa.gov/mfl/hazards/FloridaTsunamis.html

Dave,

There was a program on the History Channel here yesterday about just this possiblity. It showed very clearly the conditions on the volcano in the Canary Islands that would result in a massive landslide into the Atlantic and the generation of a huge tidal wave that would hit the eastern USA, including Florida with waves up to 100 feet high. In fact from what they showed the waves would just go over the Bahamans and keep going right over South Beach. If you were west of I95 you would be more than likely spared the worse. Such events have happened in the past and they will again. It is more than likely just one of those when questions to be answered by nature. And, northeastern Brazil, West Africa, and Europe would get slammed aw well.
