The mystery plant above is none-other than the Panama Hat Plant, Carludovica palmata. A popular palm look-a-like in the tropics.

ryan you are correct! i had never heard of it before so was racking my limited brain capacity to try & figure it out.i asked one of the staff at the hotel what it was & she ripped out a hunk & gave it to me.when i saw that the bottom of the plant was tuberose-looking i realized it wasn't a palm.phil bergman knew what it was,too,just from my verbal description.

Did you stay at Ubud? It has been a while since we went to Bali. Usually just straight to Jakarta to visit my family. I think a few days stop over next time would be nice :).

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

It should grow for you , I used to grow them down near Brisbane .
