Thank you Ciczi! Actually, we have exactly five hours of wait at this point. The wave is expected to hit Hilo at 11:19 HST, and before that time no one can really predict with any level of accuracy exactly what size tsunami wave we can expect. 11:19 HST = 1:19 PDT, 4:19 EDT and 22:19 in Sweden and all of continental Europe.

I posted the this on the other thread. I hope its big enough to see, just little damage.

----------------------------

Meg said what I was gonna, other than they are really mentioning Hilo Bay to be the big recipient. They said the last big one was in 1960 after a 8.3 earthquake in Chile. 60 people were killed in Hawaii. :(

Oh yes, they did say a wave IS coming, not sure of the height, but it was just over 7 feet at the special Tsunami buoy, waaay out in the Ocean.

Now the weird part. Only a few moments ago I realised that I had a dream of a huge Tsunami hitting where I live, or at least where I was. (Dreams are not exact you know) I was driving home from slightly uphill and saw a wave WAY higher than I had ever seen on the horizon. I could only go back a block to the highest ground where 3 homes were. Most people were waiting to watch a little downhill, I was climbing for higher ground, shinnying across decks as they were pulled into the surf. The only immediate survivors were me and a TV Cameraman?

But I think the Dream was because of the Earthquake off Japan yesterday afternoon, now small by Chile standards.

Good luck to everyone.

Saw some pictures from Chile on swedish newsprogram. Very disturbing... I guess it's horrifying to sit and wait for a tsunami wave that no one knows the size of.

My love to you all in the area

Just posted an update in the thread in the weather forum. Ciczi, you may be one of the few who will be able to fully appreciate it!

Wishing everybody in Hilo town and beyond the very best. We saw an area over there where a previous tsunami had hit a school and it was very devestating. This was of coarse before they had early warnings like they do today. Everybody be safe over there!

Tsunami watch here in Port Macquarie considering my garden is only inches away from king tides (atually we are having high tides at the moment), Iam a little concerned. Can anyone confirm that it hit in Hawaii at about 3ft? If it does indeed hit here I will video it. And if it is 3ft my garden will get a nice watering of salt.

Actually the TV news crews here in Hilo were focused on a part of Hilo Bay very near the large hotels on Banyan Drive, and there were several tidal surges of about nine feet. One moment the bottom reefs of Hilo Bay were visible, then within a few minutes the water came up to nearly submerge a small bridge in the area which normally sits about ten feet above the water. Hilo Bay is well known from previous tsunamis to funnel the water into a higher surge than most other areas of the islands. I watched about five such surges over a time of about two hours, but they then seemed to be diminishing somewhat so I went on to other things, like watering my dry, dry garden plants.

WOW Garrin, thats amazine! Where were you watching the swells from?? What bridge almost submerged? That low one just north of Waianuenue on 19? Did da fisherman get their boats out of harbor? Did you snap some photos?

Glad to hear things were not as bad as they could have been. :) Thanks for the report.

Channel 7 News had a camera on about the third floor of the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel looking down on Coconut Island (Moku Ola), and it was the footbridge to the island that was featured. There were white water rapids passing beneath the bridge, first one way then the other, with calm spells between. Someone reported that the Ponds, the delta of the Wailoa River in Wailoa State Park, actually emptied several times then refilled with sea water almost up to the arched bridges from one part to another. The parking lot of the Wailoa small boat harbor was under water at times. That was reported in the Hilo newspaper this morning. And there was a photo in the paper of the fishing boats all moved and anchored well offshore. The local Civil Defense office did an amazing and commendable job. By the time the surges came there was not a person left in the inundation zones. Even out here in Puna the highways were absolutely deserted after Civil Defense asked people to leave the highways open for possible emergency vehicles. People here really come together with each other in times like that! Also I expect most were like me, glued to my TV set to see my first live-time tsunami.

Garrin, watched the same channel here on O`ahu. Recorded it. Perhaps some day I'll edit it down to just a few minutes and save that to You Tube if can.
