Videos of BS Man planted palms...

Featured Replies

Inspired by Wal in the past, and just recently Steve, I decided to video my front yard planted palms. I thought about waiting for overcast, but I'm a "in the moment" guy, so that didn't work. Anyway the quality is so-so and near as I can tell its the best my camera can take. (Hey its probably 5 years old or so, what do you want?)But it gives you a good idea of what the dealio is..

The last ones are big, may be tonite before they are up.

Nice tour. Like your Dypsis and Kentiopsis collections. The 2nd video didn't load but the other 3 did. Cool.

And yet most of the front yard is weed free (compared to a couple years ago) :( But you know I'm a comic at heart.

I'd like to see vids of other peoples places. Hop to it I say!

Hi Bill,

Loved all the videos. It's amazing how many species you now have planted. I see the Copernicia sueroana is looking really nice and is quite happy. I should try to do a little video of my garden sometime.

On the other hand, I notice your planting lots of palms very close together. I hope you will consider planting more of your palms spaced out a little more in the future. Your only asking for big problems in the future. In the long run, it's not worth sacrificing quality for quanity.

The yard though has come a long way. Lots of rare species!

You know, for some I guess they're boring. I deduced this because I can go to my "channel" as it were and see the total views. The 1st video has 70 views, yet the 5th video has only 23 views and the 6th shorter Basselinia video has only 20. Its a fairly even drop-off rate as you go down the list.

Considering the fact I don't currently have a duplicate species planted, so each video IS OF DIFFERENT PALMS that means people are dropping off after the 1st video. Hmmm. Sorry I'm not entertaining enough! :D:P

Even the 4th video which has my 5 foot tall Kentiopsis magnifica AND the Mad Fox Dypsis marojeyji in it has only 35 views.

I can take it, can anyone here that saw the first but dropped off before the last one tell me why and what lost your interest?

Just curious, trying to make a better "experience" :bemused:

The interesting thing about Bill's video is that I pronounce some scientific names (in my head) very differently.

I watched all your videos and found them very interesting and great,i cant think of any reason to watch just the first one but not the resthuh.gif You have many wonderfull palms and rare, slow growing ones in unusually big sizesdrool.gif

Is the D. mealy bug lastelliana you said the true Dypsis sp. ''Mealy bug'' or a mealy bug version of D. lastelliana? Are its leafs more lax than true D. lastelliana's or the same? How old is your big D. lastelliana and Acanthophoenix?

Kostas, I have 4 different types of D. lassteliana, plus a D. mealybug. That could be either Dypsis malcolmberi or manajerensis or both!

The big D.lass. was purchased in a nursery that imports from Hawaii. It started and grew over there, I suspect about 4-5 years old at most? The Acantho phoenix has been a So Cal plant for a long time and is probably over 10 years old.

Glad you liked the vids.

Bill,

As I viewed your movies, where i kind of "fell" off I guess is it seemed kind of repetitive. I would have liked a little more explanation of the palms, (me being a rookie) and what you are envisioning as your landscape takes form. For example, If you were to say, I planted this Copernicia between these two dypsis for an overwhelming contrast in leaf appearance. " A little information on the palms is what I'm getting at. Also, I think it would have helped tremendously if you weren't the cameraman and the narrator at the same time. Sometimes when going "Palmumentary" I think you need to add that Human element of a physical person explaining the palms, not just a voice. Beautiful specimens, to say the least! You seem to have a real cornucopia of mass varieties of palms, from everywhere.

Big Curly has to be my favorite! One day, when I get enough stuff established and can offer some canopy and protection, that will be one I'll have to try.

Anyway, I hope that was helpful for you when filming future "espisodes." I hope I didn't come off as overly critical, I was just trying to give you my most honest constructive opinion!

FINS UP BILL!
