Dave's topic on the Scorps breaking up caused me to break out some of my old lps (yep, lps) and to do some searching on youtube for old rock favorites. Everyone has a different opinion on what heavy metal, hair, arena rock really stands for. Here are a few of the songs that come to mind when I think of this genre. Please post your own favorites.

So what do heavy metal groups all have in common?

Lots of guitar

Heavy drums

Piercing lead vocals, the higher-pitched the better

Of course there are exceptions, like Van Halen.

Or, TWISTED SISTER?!?!?!

Jimi did some metal, some blues, and everything in between. Hard to put any label on him.

what song by him are refering to as "metal?"

I would call his rendition of the National Anthem at Woodstock, heavy metal.

I can accept that you would not. I, unfortunately, am old enough to have been through the whole evolution of metal, so metal to me does not necessary have to be head banging (Twisted Sister), or high pitched screaming vocals "Hell bent for leather" stuff. Metal to me definitely encompases some blues. Maybe call it blues metal or metal blues, but to me metal is encompassed by the metal sounding guitar than anything else, distorted or not.

Not heavy metal. So, by the heading of the thread, you are correct. I can accept that you would not think of JH as heavy metal. I, unfortunately, am old enough to have been through the whole evolution of metal, so metal to me does not necessary have to be head banging (Twisted Sister), or high pitched screaming vocals "Hell bent for leather" stuff. I just think of metal bands, not necessarily heavy metal. Metal to me definitely encompases some blues. Maybe call it blues metal or metal blues, but to me metal is encompassed by the metal sounding guitar than anything else, distorted or not.

your definition is much broader than mine.i find hendrix WAY too psychedelic in the lyrics dept. to be considered metal so we will have to agree to disagree, but remember, musicians always think they know more about music than everyone else. :winkie:

Yes,we indians think of heavy bands with the above mentioned qualities only..And by the way metallica i do not find any mention of their band here. And metallica's Metallica album is my favouriate, white snake's slide it in,slip of the tongue...

The term heavy metal supposedly came about from a line in the Steppenwolf song Born to be Wild "I like smoke and lightning, heavy metal thunder". Does that then mean it was the first metal song and as such anything earlier isn't meta?.

My personal all time favourite is that well known headbanger -- Jackson Browne.

its possible that metal existed before the term to describe it did :mrlooney:

Its hard for me to see how you would classify Jimi as metal. You've got to draw a line somewhere.

Haha, then there's Sinister, fitting nicely into the "Barked" vocal category of metal. Don't forget the double kick. I'm going to avoid posting any Nordic devil metal.

And one of my favorite bands of all time, with a little known song of theirs:

Quite so. Lest we forget, the term 'heavy metal' was in whole 'heavy metal thunder' thanks to John Kay from Steppenwolf.
