I am going to plant my 2 ravenea rivularis into the ground as they've out grown their pots (my last post had pics).

How far away from a wall or a structure should I plant?

My 2 are a about 1 meter tall each.

I do not like to plant near the house at all. I see many others that do but it for sure causes problems for me. First are wind storms, the palm can batter your house. Painting the house is a drag with plants in the way. Also pipe repair and other utilities that are near a house can be comprimised. Insects that live in the palm can decide the house is warmer. Plants block off breezes that naturaally cool the house. Views from inside are blocked. Bad people can hide in plants around the house.

I'd say about 10 feet (3 meters) away at least.

Majesty palms get big....I would say at least 3 meters as well...but for that reason.....BTW Ken knows big palms.

Since these love so much water, I would be concerned about that much moisture constantly being near the house. I'd plant away several feet.

Also think about how fat those palm's trunks will get!

I agree with some of what Ken says, but I like shorter distances. For single trunks, NO closer than 3 feet, probably closer to 5 foot is better, clumpers should be at LEAST 5'.

Its all a personal thing, but the best thing is to imagine it 10 years from now, not 10 months.

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

I have several planted very close to the house. However, I wouldn't plant a majesty that close since they get very large and full.

Thank you everyone for replying. My ravenea rivularises are actually going to be planted near the water tanks (again see my last post - it's got pics). I just needed the info to see where I will put other plants in relation to them. Will post more pics when they're in the ground.

3 feet isn't too bad for a queen, because of the leave structure and trunk size. I have mine at 4-5 feet. I would say 8-10 feet for a majesty.

Planted mine 8' from the house. It now is clearing the roof of second floor.
