Yep Samir, j'ai grandi à Nice (d'où la passion des plantes tropicales je suppose...), but know I freeze in Bordeaux every winter. The garden is protected by a 20 feet wall on the right side and although badly exposed (North east) I've been able to grow quite a few species of cold hardy palms...

A bientôt..

A perfect little garden indeed. Very well maintained and aesthetically great!

Europe has seen much cold lately, but in our country, southeastern Europe, so far we have had an uncommonly warm winter, in fact I can't recall a winter like that and I'm 43 years old. Most of the days we have been having 18-20C (64-68F) and our nightime lows (at least where I live) are kept pretty high, at around 15-17C (59-62F).

Tomorrow the Athens area is forcasted for temps between 20C (68F) and 12C (54F), and Miami for 11-3C (52-37F), so this will be the mid-winter day when Athens will be actually warmer than Miami!!! Amazing...

Thanks everyone for the nice comments.

I started the garden 9 years ago from nearly nothing, only an old Lagerstroemia indica (flowering tree) and a big ficus carica (fig tree).

There are 26 species of palms in the ground and I'm growing many others (about 120) in pots that I take in the greenhouse in winter. We had temperatures of -11°C in this garden last year, but all the palms made it. This year we only had -5°C so far, so it should be fine...

I do should try a santa catarina syagrus (I've actually been to Santa Catarina State in southern Brazil in 2000 and just didn't bother gathering seeds...me idiot !)

Best of luck to all of you guys (and girls... sorry), keep the germination box alive....

Hi,

The temperature dropped to -5F! in bretigny sur orge a small town at the south of Paris, that's an historical record.

There's a lot of snow in the all country.

Brrr...

Jonimic,

Your little garden is absolutely beautiful, even with the snow on the ground. You appear to be wildly addicted to your palms like so many of us here. Let me ask you, the palm in the lower left hand corner in post #3, is it Chamaedorea microspadix? I know this species is very cold hardy. Thanks and good luck....

PS....and we are experiencing some unusally cold temp's right now for the Fort Lauderdale/ Miami area.

Thanks again for the kind new comments.

Yes Jeff, it is a Chamaedorea microspadix. Believe it or not, I never lost any chamaedorea microspadix, would it be in my Bordeaux garden, where we had -11°C last year for a couple days, or Lacanau-Ocean, on the coast, in sand, where temperatures also went down to -8°C.

They got a few burnt leaves, but spectacularly re-grew in spring.

Only Chamaedorea radicalis is as hardy (hardier even) I believe, unless you experienced that kind of hardiness with other species in the genus.

It is -5°C while I'm writing this morning, but very dry and nice actually!!

Will send news after the cold snap (which seems to be hitting the whole northern hemisphere, doesn't it?)

Cheers

Happy New Year

Very nice Jonimic. I'm surprised that Chamaedorea microspadix and radicalis can take snow.

Hi.

Can't see the snow pictures anymore from palms in snow, so also I prefer the summer shots, Nice garden.

It's really weird cold this year to see how far into europe the cold can be, only southeast europe has got some nice weater. I saw some pics yesterday from the sky on Europe, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, UK, and many more countries white from the snow. Everywhere there are records from the cold what you don't see that so much. Few days ago I saw the forecast for Nice, they got light frost every night... really weird.

Let's hope summer come very fast again! ;)

Yeah Robbin, you're right, I don't think "that much" of Europe is getting struck by frost that often. Maybe once every 20 years or so. But see, the northern hemisphere as a whole seems to be hit by pretty cold weather at the moment. So let's be optimistic, and consider that from now, any palm species that made it through this tough winter should be in every garden next year...!

I'm surprised you don't get any lower temperatures in the Netherlands than I get in Bordeaux. I had -11°C last year. You didn't ! I'm moving to the Netherlands tomorrow !!
