Greetings to you, Peter! Merry Christmas & (hopefully) a very Happy 2010 to you also!

That photograph is quite a vision! Tropics vs. Arctic! Members of IPS on this side of the Atlantic Ocean are regularly advising that this winter will indeed, be "one to remember!" It would be hard to argue against this "proposed weather scenario" as the middle & now the NE of the USA is literally buried in snow, and it has already snowed in SE Texas (which is rather mild all year) so who knows! Your photo adds credibility to the Northern Hemisphere palm lovers' nightmare.

At any rate, regardless of what we can do little about, except for "micro-controls" such as lightbulb heating and burlap blankets over our tender plants, just enjoy the unusual views you are seeing in a region that isn't normally a winter wonderland! The one thing that concerns me, Peter, is that technically it is still autumn!!! Winter isn't even HERE YET!! Oh, oh!

Have a gret day,

Dr. Paul

Nice picture of a really "White Christmas"!

Tonight it is a cool ...27° Centigrade because it is raining in southern Costa Rica, otherwise it is 30°C at night and 35 ° C during the day.

I was just there last week Peter and it snowed then as well, it was chilly but beautiful. I stayed at a hotel next to the World Court in The Hague. Where are you in relation to that location.

What a nice full palm for a snowy climate! In this storm did you have any issues with palm fronds breaking due to the weight of the snow?

Federico, nice shots of your palms/cycads.... I hope they all make it through the winter. I think your encephalartos may be the most sensitive to the cold temperatures. Best of luck! Jv

Arnhem must get significantly colder than the coastal cities. But winter doesn't look much colder than Seattle, where Trachycarpus thrives.

Cold Cold Cold! Another killer winter, last winter was horrible but it looks like this one going to be even more horrible. Frost forecasted so far as we can see during the nights with sometimes some heavy cold above the snow.

Hope that it will warm up some soon an our mild west circulation comes back soon to blow the cold away. If not there will be some dead palms trees again around the country. Because also the bigger places with water are going to freeze the water influence doesn't couny anymore so even the milder places gets the cold now.
