Seems like every MacDonald's here in South Louisiana has palm heavy landscaping, so I thought about trying a thread that other might add on to with Palms at their local McDonalds.

It was inspired by this quite old and nice Butia, while I waited in the drive through in the rain. Not a great picture, but I'll get a better one next time.

BTW - I am guessing it got that lean from Hurricane Andrew, whose eye passed right here in 1992.

Yeah, looking at the plams at macDonalds in Lismore NSW (my in-laws home turf) with Archontophoenix etc, it makes the occaisonal Erythrina at Hastings NZ Mac look pretty sad. The curse of a temperate climate.

I believe you are referring to the American restaurant called McDonalds, not MacDonalds. Home of the Golden Arches.

That said, I may have it all wrong. You may be referring to McDowells, Home of the Golden Arcs.

Na, Bo and Dean won't kick it out. I'm sure they're just running out to take pix of the palms at the McDonalds in their neighborhoods.

Maybe i can get a pix of a Sabal palmetto pushing up between the sidewalk cracks here in JAX.

Summers are great, 90f/32c in the day & 70f/21c at night with plentiful rain & sun

Winters are subtropical with occasional frosts and freezes. Tropical cyclones happen.

We have a few Royal palms in the warm microclimates but Coconuts freeze.

Almost every McDonald's around here has pygmy dates around it somewhere. Usually in the drive-thru. Kind of like the Chevron and Mobil stations. They all have pygmies in the planters between all the pumps. I bet the McDonalds in the Phoenix area has some cool desert cactus plants.

You should have done a thread on In-N-Out, thier trademark is having a criss cross double W. robusta in front of every store. I did see one store where they tried it with queens but it works better with Washies.

Butia capitata at McDonalds, Madera, CA.

photo53.jpg

And Sabals at the Taco Bell across the street.

photo52.jpg

Those pictures are a couple years old. The Butias are always over pruned, this is a rare picture of them not completely butchered. They set seed for the first time that I have noticed in the 15 years that I have lived here, only to be promptly cut off by the gardeners. The Sabals are very rarely seen anywhere around here, let alone at a fast food restaurant.

Robert,

Sabals in Madera? I am surprised. They should retire their gardeners for a couple of years and let the palms grow out.

Other exceptions are the Utah locations.

St. George, Utah has crossing Washingtonia filifera

4 new locations near Salt Lake City have no palms. It just doesn't seem right...

Dick,

I talked to they guys at the local nursery (they do a lot of municipal landscape projects) about those Sabal and was told they didn't do that job. I thought they might have, since they have a couple of 10' plus clear trunk Sabals in front of the nursery. When asked about the Sabals at the nursery, he said they arrived by mistake.

Unfortunately, those Taco Bell Sabals will need to be over pruned for many years as they are too close to the driveways. They have added about 5' of trunk in 15 years, so it will probably be another 15 years before they are tall enough to clear vehicles.

I think there were probably at LEAST 10 Bismarkia's around, several smaller CIDP's, the ubiquitous "x-ed palms" (2 sets of them) and I think a Chamerops too.
