Mulch for my palms!

Several people have asked me "Whats the deal on that El Corazon Mulch, is it any good?" I know a lot of people that use it, it is supposed to be "cooked" via sitting and decomposing, but what do I know?

Well, I do know that the Green Waste recycling center, El Corazon (because its in the heart/middle of Oceanside) has $2 a truckload deals on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays.

As Kris might say, "Lets go for a load".

Driving up, you will spot this..

And friendly Anita will check that you live in Oceanside via a Cal Drivers liscense and take your $2. Its open from 9am to 12.

You then drive forward and wait for a man driving a very big skip loader that is working some piles moved out front for the event. Normally they are "in back", and thats also where I normally go. This "out front" part is new to me.

My house is just over 1 1/2 miles from here, but I'm not leaving yet. I drive past the "selections".

You guys in Oceanside are lucky! Looks like good stuff, Bill. I just applied 5 cubic yards back in September and it looks like I need to do it again before winter really sets in.

Except if you have questions..

Oh yes, without the "deal" today, that would have been about $80-90 for what I got.

Oh yes. I should mention that anyone can buy mulch from El Corazon, its just the "deal" days or the "free load it yourself" offers are for the O'side residents.

I think if you buy it normal, its $12-20 a yard.

There are several stables near me (5 miles) where people board their horses. They are more than happy to fill up your truck for free. Some is aged more than others, but it all makes good mulch. It is usually moist and filled with urine and it smells for a couple of days after its spread. I spread it on about 6 inches and it smothers grass and low weeds. I've never had it burn anything.

There are stables galore near me with free horse "litter" , but living in a gated community would be pushing it!

Wow - That is some deal Bill! If I had such a mulch source 1 1/2 miles away like you, I would have it 12-18 inches deep around my palms. What does Anita think of the container ranch? Your stable of Ranch Hands continues.

Bill, I load the truck 2-3 times a year. The yard's gotta be 4"-6" deep in the stuff. So, you spend the $2 to have 'em load it for ya? Tsk, tsk, get out there and shovel it yourself like a true Irish Springer! ( manly yes, but I like it too) ;)

Spend an hour shoveling mulch into a truck to only have to unload it again? Load your truck for $2? Does being manly mean being dumb and inefficient? :bemused:

Bill, my truck's the same size as yours. Just kiddin' about the shoveling part but a couple years ago I paid for a load and the clown loading the mulch accidently dropped too much in the bed and almost flattened my leaf springs! Since then it's strictly do-it-myself. I go out there on the way home from work to pick up 1/2 loads of fresh stuff for the dog run all the time and to top off the yards. One morning I was chatting with two guys loading up when one guy sez (ala Apocalypse Now) "God I love the smell of fresh mulch in the morning!". :D

I get my mulch delivered to me...10 cubic yards at a time. I would shovel and mulch everything myself. I hurt my elbow back in May doing it. I initially thought it was tennis elbow from using the computer too much, but now I am sure it was from shoveling! I hired guys to do it in Sept., but I don't think they put on a thick enough layer and it looks like I will have to apply another layer this week.

Bill,

That's pretty hard to beat! A great deal for sure. I'm extreamly lucky,I get tree trimmings dump at my property for free, good clean stuff. But to drive 1 1/2 miles to get it for $2, that's pretty damn good.

My god, is your house finally going to have that no weeds, planted, organized, clean, sweet smelling, no palms in the pot sitting around, fertilized, get ready for a tour "touch" to it? Yahoo !!! I can hear screams of joy in the background.

When's the party?

I used to use that stuff every chance I would get - and it is not only good, it's great.

If you were an Oceanside resident, it used to be free. A SDG&E bill from a friend used to be all I needed. I used to load up eight trash cans in the back of the pick up whenever I was in the neighborhood, which was often. Then, at home, use the dolly and wheel each can to the waiting palms and presto, nice free mulch with little effort. :)

It still is free for Oceanside residents. IF you want to shovel it your self. Didn't take me long to decide its worth the $2 bucks for them to load it. 6+ yards for 6$ I like. :D
