Seems I have two young chickens that have flown(?) in from somewhere and decided to get comfy in my gardens. They're squooshing the mulch around which makes me think they wanna lay eggs! It's hard to "Shoo" 'em away since they freeze up and blend in with the shrubbery if you lose sight of them. My pet wolverine's unavailable so what do I do???

Collect the eggs for breakfast. Feed them well, they should be ready in time for Thanksgiving.

Sounds like they're wild, which will make for a freerange delicacy, but . . . .

I get a sense that murder is either impossible or unpalatable.

Hmm.

Gonna do some research.

Chickens are actually good for the soil. If I didn't travel so much for work I would have a few, not only for their wonderful eggs but to scratch through all the horse manure and spread it around. They eat tons of insects and really loosen the soil.

Have you caught the chickens...?? You can start feeding them in one spot in the afternoon and get them something they can go in at night... And then they will know soon enough to go there to feed. They do prefer to go in at night... so if you can borrow or get chook pen, you can catch them once they go in there. And then, you can cook them.... they taste better free range... no joke.

Regards, Ari :)

Once you catch one it is very effective to grab them by the head and give them a spin breaking their necks. Then just throw them in a big pot of boiling water to loosen the feathers. Then pluck them, and slit their stomachs and pull out their inards. Then you can cut them up do what you want with them.

I have a problem with feral chicken reproducing too much - dozens of them, maybe about 50 now. The only way to catch them is late in the afternoon. When it starts to get dark they get sleepy and start to move up to tree branches for the night (or to any other elevated place) and that is where and when you can get them, with less effort.

One or few are beneficial to the garden - they remove grass and keep it cleaner. Too many are like an earthquake. They dig anywhere they find any moisture in the soil and break tender plants.
