As a result of the recent PSSC journal issue dedicated to Licualas et al., I focused on learning more about Licualas on our most recent visit to HI. So here is one that needs ID. The pics are of a mature (10-15 year old) plant, dubbed Licuala var "Big Trunk" by the late Ken Foster. Anyone able to provide a more specific Genus/species ID?

If the large terminal leaflet is consistent it is lauterbachii var bouganvillense .

Tully, wet tropics in Australia, over 4 meters of rain every year.

Home of the Golden Gumboot, its over 8m high , our record annual rainfall.

Thanks guys for the pics and info on "Big Trunk." Looks like a keeper. George, where were those pics taken? Looks like they were in about 50/50 shade???

What's the difference between Licuala lauterbachii var bouganvillense with just the 'normal' Licuala lauterbachii? I have a couple of Licuala lauterbachii (well, at least they are labelled as one) and they have large terminal leaflets. I will see whether they are too ratty for pics or not. Mine are under 50% shade too, Dean.

Was taken at what was called Kapoho Palms Nursery (now Kipuku Nursery) in Kapoho.

Plant was in pretty deep shade - more than 50%.

Ari , the normal lauterbachii does not have the extra wide terminal leaflet.

PACSOA have a great pic , and here's one at the Mission Beach nursery.

Mine do have the extra wide terminal leaflet, but the other leaflets aren't as fine as those... Too late to take photos after work.

Got this one from Mark Daish as Licuala sp. Rabaul ,

Mikey told me he thought it was Licuala lauterbachii var bouganvillense

It had leaves over 2m tall , but now they are only knee high .

Its planted down the back now .

Just had a wander around the garden with lowey this morning.
