Many of you talk about using coconut fiber to sprout seeds.

Who in the USA is using it and where do you buy yours?

Steve, I just picked up 6 bags of coco fiber today. I had to drive an hour north of here to Jaco to find them, but it was worth the trip. I also found 2.5 kilos of Osmocate at a nursery in Jaco (and a whole lot of new plants!). That's the first time I've ever found Osmocote here.

I use coco fiber to germinate most of my seeds. It's the only sterile medium I can find here and it works great. I found it in a local hardware store, but you should be able to pick up a small bag at any box store - it's usually found near the Orchid mixes.

I use it.

I bought my blocks @ WormsWay in Tampa.

They've got a website too...

Mixing it with a little perlite or vermiculite helps too...

This place has the best quality, and deal, beware of some low quality bricks, they can be a nightmare to rehydrate, and break up, Ed

Steve, you should be able to find the Coconut Coir Fiber at some of the garden centers or nurseries there. I recently picked it up at a local Garden Center in brick form (see pic below). It comes from Sri Lanka. It says it is weed and pathogen free, enhances soil microbial life, neutral to slightly acidic pH, provides excellent aeration for substantial, healthy root development, etc.

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

I recently placed my first order of seeds and I have been looking for this since this seems to be the favored medium for germinating palm seeds. Is there really a significant difference in results between coconut coir fiber and premixed seed starting mediums such as jiffy and miracle grow? I purchased some of the Jiffy mix and am wondering if it is worth it to go searching for this stuff. If I do happen to find some, I will let you all know about where I found it.

Can help to use hot water to hydrate the coir bricks. I stretch the hose out in the sun and make sure it is full of water .

Just got my seeds in the mail. They are soaking in warm distilled water, so tomorrow I will go find some coco fiber. Thank you for the advice, will let you know where I found it. What is it about cocopeat makes it leaps and bounds better than the rest?

The natural growth hormones, the way it holds just the right amount of water, the way it always drains fast, because it always maintains the same consistency, because it doesn't break down for up to 8 years, and turn into worm castings in 12 to 18 months, like bark based soils, I use 95% coco peat coir, and 5% Perlite as a potting mix, and straight coco peat coir on top of the seed for germinating, once again, beware the lesser quality brands, they are not all the same, if you have the good stuff, that is the right consistency, just the right coarseness, not a lot of powder mixed in to the batch, you will not need hot water, it will re-hydrate easily, and brake up easily, do yourself a favor and order online, if not this time then the next time you buy, heres the link again, and here is a link to the best deal on Perlite, good luck, Ed

I called a few of the chain pet places here in the Orlando area but they didn't carry coconut fiber. Then I remembered this locally owned place called Pet Bazaar and they had it for sale there, it was the brand name "Zilla coconut husk premium reptile bedding.

I purchased my first 22, 5kg bricks from him, the last three shipments seven at a time, for a big discount, every third brick takes days to brake up, even the ones that are not that powdery, and are closer to what the product is supposed to be like, would take days to brake up, but I didn't know any Different, because the stuff is so hard to find, until I found a different brand product, then I realized how foolish I had been, Ed

Found some today at the "small" box hardware store that begins w/A in Kapolei.

It's a 9 lb block that expands to cover 12 sq feet 2" deep. Cost was about $10.

Guess I'll try to cut off a small section and see about sprouting some seeds.
