I took these pics of a Orania palindan seedling. This is it's first leaf. Bill Sanford gave it to me last year as a germinated seed. Is any body else growing these? I expect to kill it here in Corona, CA. When it needs to go in the ground I'll find a coastal home for it! :) Regards, Randy post-1270-1251740467_thumb.jpg :drool:post-1270-1251740485_thumb.jpg

Randy, MattyB gave me one of these for Valentines Day last year (He didn't know I was married). It is not a fast grower for me and I have no idea if it will live in the ground here. But there is hope since there are some palms from the Philippines that do grow here, so hopeful this is one. I will find out in a few years.

I it supposedly the most cold hardy in the genus (unless you talk to Jeff Marcus). There is one here in Ft. Myers with 4 feet of wood- its a beaut! Being from the phillippines, it may be more cold hardy than its Malagasy and New Guinea cousins...

Mine, sprouted from seed a year ago:

I've got one in the ground. First winter test, coming up....

Mine took -1C two years ago as a two leaf seedling, and only got a couple of spots. Coming from the Philliipines I would have thought it was less cold hardy than the Madagascan species.

I think it is at high elevation. But, even there, it probably only gets light frosts or less..

If you can keep the seed on and the radicle from rotting it grows much faster it's first year. Some of my radicles rotted off due to the depth they were buried and these are the slow ones. The seed is so big it's like the plant's own fertilizer injector....no roots needed.

Too late my seed is very burried. I guess mine will be a slow grower.

I have been germinating a number of Orania palinda seedlings, and they have a very unique growing point and shape.   Matt is right as far as the seed providing food to the plant while growing underground, even though they produce a fat bulbous caudex with small roots growing out the bottom.  Definitely a very unique seedling.  Here are a few pics bare root.  What a beautiful palm!   Anyone having luck growing this?

Pal Meir, another great job with your informative graphics!  You need to post some of these on Palmpedia.

I have grown these. Great palm, but not a fast palm...

Gee, I got all excited about seeing photos of this palm. I received some seed labeled Orania montana, which is a synonym of O. palindan awhile back. Germination and growth was pretty steady and I finally got one in the ground. Well the ones I have certainly don't look like those in the photos. Mine have very wide terminal leaflets which look more like O. sylvicola which I guess is possible. I think I have a photo of the seed, but will have to look for it. Thanks for the post.

"Put your money where your mouth is"... this thread got recently bumped and needs some pictures desperately. I previously mentioned I grew these before. Well, here is one of the original seedlings. She is doing very well and is already catching the eyes of a few... I don't think I have any more. I gave a couple to Ken Johnson. Let's see how his are doing--Calling Ken! Miss you buddy. Kevin McCloud got a couple from me too--he is an excellent grower so his are doing well, I bet...

Looking at a rare palm like this, and seeing it take off from a seed that I germinated and nurtured, really give a lot of self-validation. B)

Over the years, every seedling I've grown has died because of severe spider mite attacks.

Spray ±diluted second brew of coffee on the underside of the leaves, they (and mealy bugs, too) don’t like coffee.

He means after you made your coffee--add water and run it again. A diluted tea.

The first brew I drink myself. :interesting: And then using the same coffee (i.e. the coffee grounds) I brew another cup of coffee, let it cool down, dilute it with ± the same amount of soft water, and spray it over and under the leaves and let drink it the mites.

Excellent, there is no problem if the liquid pour down into the stem?

No, that’s not a problem but another positive effect, because it frightens other pests.

I love a coffee pot that produces real coffee! :)  I use coffee regulary around the garden as a quick burst of nitrogen and for scale control.  I have never sprayed it on the leaves. Thanks for the idea!

Randy, MattyB gave me one of these for Valentines Day last year

I wish some one would give me one ssedling for Valentine's day : I never saw this species elsewhere than on pics but I love it.
I am sure it would grow nicely in our srilankan jungle.

Where to get seeds or seedlings?

Andrew, that is a nice looking palm. Beautiful trunk, almost has the look of a Satakentia.

Here are 3 that I planted in the garden from the seed I posted earlier.  They are slow up here, but they are surviving in St Petersburg FL.  Cannot wait for the droopy leaflet look.  Growing under Oak canopy.
