Dear Friends :)

I take pleasure in inviting you all to a yet another Palm Maintenance Work, this time its Cidp Red Fruticas palm that we undertook the planting work in our garden.

This palm came to me as saplings from dear brother M@x.And this palm though happens to be a kind of hybrid, has show similar growth rates like a CIDP Std form.

And those who want to see the stills of a mature specimen of the palm discussed here, then kindly visit the link given below !

Red Canary Dates ??? :hmm:

And by the way i had to plant this palm now since all our forum friends, insisted that i plant a palm tree in our garden to celeberate the birth of "Little Kris ". :)

And i hope you all enjoy the visuals & illustrations that are seen in the following post. And any comments, suggestions & advise is always welcome here...So feel free !

Thanks & Love,

Kris :)

Okay Lets have those visuals.. :hmm:

The basic tools that one must keep handy are :

post-108-1248501245_thumb.jpg

Now lets see the place that we have decided to plant that lovely palm..And i must tell that this area is a ammended zone, most of the clay soil was removed and replaced with washed liver sand along with red earth long back.

post-108-1248501378_thumb.jpg

Here is the still of the palm that we are going to operate ? :hmm:

post-108-1248501493_thumb.jpg

We tied the leaves up,so that its easier to work & to move it !

post-108-1248501639_thumb.jpg

post-108-1248501665_thumb.jpg

Now i started to cut the barrel opening(mouth) so that the palm slips out of the industrial barrel easily !

post-108-1248501800_thumb.jpg

Watering the barrel,So that the palm easily slips out of the barrel while pulling the crown of this palm.

Here you can see the mouth of the barrel is cut open & its ready !

post-108-1248502176_thumb.jpg

Now the palm is getting readied to be tipover..

post-108-1248502257_thumb.jpg

Here you can see we have used the plastic mesh,Bio degradable grade ! This is used to discourage Rodents/Field Rats from having easy accesses to the root region of this newly planted palm..

post-108-1248502392_thumb.jpg

And here is the visual of the empty barrel,No signs of broken or damaged roots sticking inside..

post-108-1248502781_thumb.jpg

Now lets have close-up view of the root development of this palm ! :)

post-108-1248502479_thumb.jpg

Shall we have a look at the pit,in which this baby is gona sit & grow in years to come !!!post-108-1248502587_thumb.jpg

Now the entire palm was rolled over the plastic mesh, and gently tied in a circular fashion, just like a perforated container around the root region.

The pit is now being filled with coarse grade perlite..

post-108-1248503217_thumb.jpg

Now the palm is set up right,And soon the shifting of this palm will commence..

post-108-1248503352_thumb.jpg

The palm is now lowered into its new home

post-108-1248503425_thumb.jpg

Now we started to fill this pit with the same dug up soil...which was lying around :hmm:

post-108-1248503543_thumb.jpg

Here you can see that we started to water this palm,so that if their are any air pockets/loose sand..they should settle down !post-108-1248503655_thumb.jpg

After 6 to 8 minutes of watering, very little soil caved in since the soil medium is sandy soil.So it was not much of a problem to get it compacted around the root region..

post-108-1248503803_thumb.jpg

The Palm tie was removed once we confirmed that the soil has been layered perfectly around this palm's roots & trunk !

Immedietely when we stopped watering this palm, the stagnating water just disappeared in a couple of minutes, without any clogging or water stagnation! As the soil medium used here is predominently coarse grade river sand. :hmm:

post-108-1248504535_thumb.jpg

As of now the palm is doing just great, showing no signs of shock or stress, and luckly the mercury dipped a bit and brought in the much needed showers for a couple of days after planting this palm. And the daily temperatures here have also considerably gone down bringing in the much needed change ! :)

And i will keep you all updated as to how this baby is doing in the months to come.. :winkie:

Thanks & Love,

Kris :)

Kris, thanks for the post. How old is that red CIDP? I have one from JV with 6 or 7 fronds that came from Italy, and am curious about the growth rate.

Dear Scott :)

That Cidp(Red Fruticas)seen in the above stills are about 2 and half years old ! And they stopped growing since that barrel has become small for their root movement. For us here in south india(Chennai) all the phoenix palms grow really fast with the only exception to date palms,i.e you feed them with fertz & proper watering still no effect on speedy growth !

Thanks & Love,

Kris :)

Kris, I kind of agree with you, it has a leaf characteristic of P. sylvestris

I think it may be a hybrid and not pure CIDP. what do the other phoenix experts think?

Dear Christopher :)

Nice to meet you & have you in this thread. And i must say Chris meets Kris in this topic.. :) Thanks very much for those kind words and greetings..

Dear Luke :)

All iam interested with this palm is that,it should grow up to be a female with huge fat waist line and the trunk should have the diamond scars of a CIDP palm. And last but not the least it should bare red fruits in it..

And i have observed that even the leaves are not as glossy green as the standard/regular form..

Lots of love,

kris :)
