Howdyall:

The thread on sweet palm flowers made me wonder about the opposite.

Any palm flowers that smell vile, unpleasant, etc?

I can't think of any . . . .

Calyptrogyne ghiesbreghtiana or the Vampire Palm... the flowers attract bats during anthesis. I think they produce a stinky smell.

Also Trithrinax schizophylla... the flowers are pollenated by mosquitoes and produce a nasty odor too. I may be wrong...

Orania palindan flowers smell like wet garbage.

Seems the Calyptrogyne ghiesbreghtiana flowers are sweet and are pollinated by bats. Interesting relationship with mites, too. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calyptrogyne_ghiesbreghtiana

None that I've experienced. Now if discussing flowering trees, Ylang Ylang is obnoxious.

No one cares about your current yard temperature 🙃

Take a bit of doggy's flatulence, mix in some old lady's accident, a touch of summer jockstrap and some steak left under the car seat for a week and you just might be able to equal something that smells as repulsive as Arenga Pinnata inflorescence.

Ew. I retract my previous remark... There are some palms I will never grow.

Chamaerops seed...if left on, will eventually smell like a combination of vomit and poop. I have been a victim of this smell from my specimen in the front yard. It took me forever to find out where that smell was coming from. Nasty.

Ok, so I gotta get in on this. I have ordered some seeds from distant lands and occasionally they arrive with the fruit on. The rotting fruit smell on some sweeter fruit makes me wretch.

Chamaerops fruit after they have been frosted a few times smell awful, as someone said like rotten cheese, but the worst are Needle palm fruit. On the flip side, Sabal Riverside flowers smell wonderfull, and even better are Trithrinax campestris. T. campestris give off an odor that smells like an expensive perfume. Arenga engleri flowers also smell very sweet.
