I use sugar cane Mulch on the garden every year up here in SE QLD as it is a valuable/benefical mulch high in nitrogen, good weed suppressant and breaks down fairly quickly, hence i recommend you put it on thickly ...say 6 inches .However there's a downside to using this mulch as well...1 Don't put any large stalks of sugar cane on the garden- they may harbour Cane beatle borers that will go for your palms and 2. WEAR a DUST MASK as the fine particles of sugar cane(silica) can get into your lungs and give you Cancer.(Been acouple of cases of landscapers here on the coast who used the cane regularly and have died by not taking any precautions as such). If your mulch is dry and dusty give it a hose down with some water also! ...Happy Mulching! ...cheers Mike Green(NEWCAL)

Cheers Mike.

The packaging says it comes from Lismore NSW, whether that makes any difference or not and whether cane beatle would survive a winter here is another.

Yes I will take precautions when applying.

Thanks

Hi there, I've used sugar cane mulch many many times for small mulching jobs mainly, although at the beginning of my main back area I used it extensively. Mike has said it all, lay it deep and wet it immediately. You can see the soil chow down on this mulch then of course the palms rejoice and before you know it, more mulch is needed.

ps: I've never used NSW sugar cane mulch, gotta be Queenslander sugar cane mulch for me.

Happy Gardening

Cheers,

Wal

Cheers. Do you wet it after spreading or when you open the bag? This mulch has a sky blue tinge to it.
