Microwave disinfection of palms

I saw this on the EPS forum, and thought it was interesting viewing. In Italy, a rig is being tested to kill the red palm weevil, using microwave technology. In this experiment, they cut down the infected tree to assess the results on both tree and insect. Video link here:

Now we won't need to fire up the barby to eat those suckers.

Nothing better than eating larve fed on palm heart!

Cool, yeah, but cost-effective?

How many lire does that cost? (Maybe it's Euros now . . . .)

Where are the weevil's natural enemies?

Imagine if those beetles get to the U.S., and you're faced with zapping all of Beverly hills?

I couldn't read the video, but.........if you wash your kitty or puppy, don't put them in the microwave oven to dry them off. I hear its been tried with disasterous results. :)

Fascinating! I was looking at their other videos and I saw a temp probe the were moving around. I saw 82, but I can't tell if it was Celsius or Fahrenheit.

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

82C is 179.6F, now THAT would be hot! :)

Very cool technology in that video!

Wouldn't that zap the palm as well?

My understanding from reading recent comments on the EPS forum, is that the use of microwaves might be as brutal with the tree as it is with the weevils, the hope being, that whereas the weevils will not bounce back, the tree eventually will. It was also pointed out that the idea may have been conceived by a well-meaning individual hoping to secure a business deal i.e. the "suck it and see" approach. Ingenious, at least.

I've seen it to on EPS and it's a cool technologic... :)

I guess I don't get it,anything HOT enough to kill the weevils and larvae,is going to kill the palm isn't it, whether it is MICROWAVES or just plain old regular heat ?
