Okay guys and gals...I thought i would ask for some help in id'ing a couple of palms at my Dad's place in North San Diego County.

But first...to introduce him (and so you can get an idea of his size in relation to the palms), this is my Dad... 6'6" tall in his stocking feet next to his D. baronii in the front yard:

Here is the first palm (sorry about the poor detail of my camera phone):

Here is the second palm whose id is in question. this one has a VERY blueish cast to it:

Hello Burt;  my guess is Trachycarpus martianus; based on the glaucous underside, and especially, the scurfy indumentum on the margins of the petiole.

I'm not paying attention!  My guess is obviously for the first palm only!

hehehehe....

thanks for the reply Darold!

any guesses on the second one?

No one has a guess as to what the blue palm could be?

The first one looks like a Brahea edulis and the second one looks like a Brahea Also maybe armata or clara. These are young palms and can be difficult by pictures to tell for sure.

My guess on first one would be this:

Brahea nitida

Synonymy: Unknown

Distribution: Mexico

Common names: Unknown

Conservation status: Unknown

My guess on the second would be this:

Brahea armata

Synonymy: Erythea armata, E. glauca, E. roezlii Distribution: Baja California

Common names: Blue hesper palm

Conservation status: Unknown

I was thinking Brahea too on the first one.  Maybe brandeegii?

thanks for the replies folks!

as Jerry says in his post, because the palms are so young (and photos are hard to judge), it's difficult to say with any surity what they are...

i think the second one looks like an armata too, but is just extremely stretched out by virtue of the fact that it's growing in a VERY shaded area...the yellow teeth on the petioles are usually a dead giveaway...but the fronds seem WAY too big and wide for an armata of that size to me..

i'll try and take some better pics and post them if anyone feels that would be helpful!

thanks again for everyone's help...much appreciated!

That second one just doesn't look like an armata to me. Its a brahea yes, but I am skeptical on armata. Can you get a picture of the upper leafblade on the second one. To me, it looks like all of the pics are of the underside. Plus, the lower leaves are way green too.
