While all the SoCal members were at Ralph Velez's this Saturday I was working on a new web bases comedy series called The Crusader. It's about a dude who's choosen to make a difference in the world by staking out a grocery store parking lot and putting nasty flyers on people's cars who take up two parking spaces. This is his crusade. I play Dooley, his not so bright cousin who's starting to learn the trade. It's a recurring role. The star is Colin Cunningham from Stargate Atlantis SG-1 (Colin on IMDB). It was super low budget but the acting turned out to be really good. I'll post a link as soon as it gets edited so everyone can watch it. Here's a few pics.

crusader-001.jpg

Our little base camp. We shot in the parking lot of the San Diego County Office of Education. Love that it was local.

crusader-002.jpg

Directors Vernon Mortensen and Kelly Parks set up the first shot.

crusader-004.jpg

Colin on left standing in for himself. When I saw the camera that the cameraman was holding I thought, "oh great this is gonna suck". But apparently it's a state of the art HD camera that shoots better than some of the larger digital cameras out on the market. It's supposed to look like a documentary anyways so as long as the acting is good, hopefully it'll look good.

Random parking lot chick. It's shot in a documentary style similar to The Office or Best In Show.

So that's where you were. It looks cold but fun at the same time. I am a big SG-1 and Atlantis fan so I recognized Colin right away, even with his small recurring role on those shows. Post some more. Do you get paid also for being the still photographer on set?

Matty,

Do you know if that camera by chance is made by RED?

This was just a high quality hand held HD digital Joe. The RED One camera is state of the art digital that can now surpass 35mm. It's all the rage in the industry right now. It's modular so the stripped down model looks like a large hand held camera and loaded up it looks like a feature film monster with all the gadgets and gizamahoos.

Is it 4K video? Now that is the rage. For today that is, 5K is already on the horizon.

Just went to links. Yes, it is 4K. Not too many places can actually show that quality, but it is coming.

The CEO of Red started Oakley glasses until they sold it a couple of years ago to Luxottica. I was working with their company for their software. It is pretty cool stuff they are doing.

Matt,

What do you mean by "web bases comedy series.?" I'm assuming you meant 'web based,' but if you did, I still don't know what that really means.

Yeah, I meant Web Based. With all the new media/new technology that's available, people are watching less and less TV and watching shows more and more on portable devices through the internet. This is what the whole ongoing SAG/Producers negotiations are about now. The "internet show" aired via You Tube, Vimeo, My Space TV, etc. is now able to make money through sponsors and advertising. So producers are basically saying "screw you guys" to the Networks, and airing their shows via the internet. Budgets run the gammut from $0 to thousands. So SAG needs to get a better contract going for us so we don't get screwed when the producers make money. Right now the only pay scale verbage for the "internet" contract basically says "it's between you and the producers" which almost always means, no pay, no residuals. Now that they are making money, we need to make ours.

Yeah, agreed. Never try and win an Oscar for "Best Delayed Thinking Action" or "projecting one's eyeball into the brain cavity". Method acting of this nature is a dangerous business. Just look at Paul. He's out there and doing it.

Matt,

Interesting! And always great to see shots from San Diego! But seriously, how much mileage can they get out of that storyline?

Bo,

You don't watch much television do you?

If they can make a television series out of a GEICO commerical, anything can get on the air,CAVEMEN! I'm waiting for the GECKO series myself

Granted it only lasted a season, but it was on network TV, what were they thinking!

Bo, not sure how long the story line can stay interesting. They go to Paul Weebler's house to meet his wife in Ep. 3. I guess script is written through 8 episodes so far.

I don't know about that. You can always go in a bunch of different directions. The final episode in the parking lot shows just how unsuccessful the vigilante is and he is forced to move onto some other "really important" civic priority like (fill in the blank).
