In Arnold Schoenberg's Pierrot Lunaire there is no "key" as such; all twelve notes of the chomatic scale are used freely.

Therefore, there is no sense of direction in the music. In most music, harmony is directional, such as G7 moving to C major7 etc to convey a feeling of a structure or story.

Schoenberg was awesome. I love Verklärte Nacht - how it never resolves.

lol...reminds me of trying (in vain i might add) to listen to John Coltrane's "Om".....couldn't get past 5 minutes of it.

Ah...Coltrane. One of my favorites, and one of the all-time greats. I love the sessions with Miles. The 'Cool Jazz' era. Hard to believe that music is 50 years old - it sounds so fresh.

While I might enjoy a live performance, it will never find a home on my iPod. This kind of music needs some context for me to enjoy it. I can't see me working in the garden while listening to this, or walking along the shore. Same with some of the improvisational jazz. My brain just doesn't work that way.
