Another Hyphaene this one I think is coriacea but not sure. This is located in Jardin Botanico La Habana but there was only this plant which is a female and no males. But it did have fertile seeds on it. There is a stand of Latania lodiggesi near by though. hum

    Great photos Oscar!  Was waiting for someone who went on the post Biennial trip to Cuba to post some photos.  By the way, it was nice meeting you en la Republica Dominicana.  Got my seeds back fine here.  Hope you did also.  Now to just wait for germination!  Maybe I'll come and visit you and the nursery in Baja California Sur one day and see all those P. ekmani growing all around the property!  Buena suerte.

    Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

     

    No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).  

    Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.  

    Nice sunsets!

    As its name reminds, the type locality is just by Falla. Falla is a town located on the coastal plains in Northern Ciego de Avila, in Central Cuba. It is a miracle the species is still there as it is a developed, populated area, with abundant agriculture. It is an impressive, beautiful and imposing species.

    Yeah thanks for bumping this up Oscar. Wish it was easier to grow Copernicia cowellii tho'. I do have one in the ground (planted from seed from Leonel Mera in the Dominican Republic). It is super slow growing for me but at least I have one. Actually I'm a bit surprised that it is growing yet as I understand they grow in serpentine soil in their native habitat. Who else is having sucess in growing COPERNICIA COWELLII? If you have one what size are yours and what are your growing conditions and soil type?
