Florida's very first earthship is about to be built in east Manatee County! These have traditionally been built out west in the desert where code restrictions were not an issue. It has taken 9 months for permitting to be completed and they are getting ready to pour the foundation. Earthships are earthen homes that are designed to be completely self-sufficient. They're made from recycled materials, use wind, solar, greywater and blackwater systems. This project is allowing people to come in as interns to help work on the project and learn about building earthships. They're also requesting people to save their bottles, cans, and tires for the project.

If you're interested in learning more about this fascinating project:

Gina, Is this the one like in Tucson, where people actually stayed inside for a year without going outside?

What you look for is what is looking

I have done quite a bit of reading on the Earthship projects. Perfectly suited to a desert type climate where they are most popular. I will be interested to see how they have adapted it here in the humid south. Didn't seem feasible based on their first work. But they must have a plan. I can't wait to see it.

Keith, I believe temperatures can be overcome via the underground cooling ducts/fans, but humidity is the biggest problem to tackle as I see it... air conditioning or dehumidifer via solar panels would be the only way...

Hopefully they were manufactured using organic processes...

There is some really cool solar panel technology hitting the market right now.

I'm sure they will have to deal with issues that are specific to Florida but to be doing this through the proper legal channels paves the way for the rest of us who would like to build something like this...without having to move to Arizona. I work a 9-5 but my BF is volunteering to work on the project and I will attempt to post pics and updates as it goes. I imagine it will be quite a process but a rewarding and exciting one for sure.
