This gives me immense pleasure to meet you all through this lovely thread,where i have tried to give step by step illustrations for those who are new to palm growing..And each time,i try to improvise new methods which are most apt for our hot tropical climate having high coastal humidity influence.So the medium is constantly kept as porous as possible for easy drainage of excess of water..

Today iam going to show you how to plant or repot a Sabal mexicana/Texas Palmetto in a large sized plastic pot.And the seeds were from Rps.com And i had purschased these seeds in small quantites,And these seeds germinated in 2 to 3 months time under normal room temperature condition.

In the following post there are visuals and are mostly self explinatory,so you wan't find much of a problem to understand the standard planting procedure..

Wow Kris, that palm is growing quick!

Your climate is year round growth for these sabals. The sabals here love our hot summers and rain, which is like your climate year round. You are growing these atleast twice as fast as they would here!

Thanks for your opinion,And yes its hot here year around and we have never experienced cold wave or frost of any kind.Its simply hot,hotter & hottest !

And even my hands are iching to plant this plam in the ground,but i think it should be fine for one more year in it.Since their roots should bust out..that may encourage me to do the planting.

Kris: I collected small seedlings of this palm in habitat last Spring. They had been mowed over by State of Texas brush tractors. I was only able to salvage a root or two on each. Since that time they have filled a 3 gallon container with roots and are now doing the same to a 7 gallon container. Like you, I find them to be much faster than Sabal minor or Sabal palmetto. This along with Sabal bermudana are the fastest growing Sabals I have. My triplet grouping looks like your June 2009 picture. I'll be putting mine in the ground in April. I'm very impressed with this palm.

Note: I think a bit of success can be attributed to the very heavy composted bark and clay soil I potted it in. I tried to duplicate the native growing conditions and apparently I was spot on for all intents and purposes.

Kris that is impressive growth in one year. I have a sabal mexicana I started from seed that is three years old and it looks like the picture in your first post. Of course mine grows inside under lights for 6 months a year. I guess climate matters. None the less, I'll keep on growing 'em. Great pics and tutorials. Love your passion.

Kris, that palms needs to go in the ground! In my experiences (which isnt extensive by any means) Sabals pick up growth quite a bit once they are in the ground, not that yours needs to speed up any! Beautifully grown palm, really speaks volumes about your horticultural practices.
