Timing is probably pretty important. I know for a fact that there have been times (usually around some holiday or some major local event like the Merrie Monarch Festival here in Hilo the week after easter) when not a single rental car has been available on the Big Island. To point out the obvious - there's only a certain number of rental cars on any of the islands. Demand and supply will drive the prices much more than on the mainland where rental car companies can get cars from other markets. On occasion when we had to rent a car, we've found Enterprise to have pretty competitive prices, but it's probably a good idea to check all the major companies. Hertz, Avis, Budget, National, Thrifty and Alamo come to mind. They're all at the Hilo airport. Enterprise has an off-airport location. And a local company is Harper, also off-airport. Both of those are about 1.5-2 miles from the airport terminal.

Dave,

Bo's right. It's usually Enterprise with the best rates. But they are all over the map at all times.

I have friends coming Feb 23 and they found a car at Budget Rent a Car for $218 for eight days. Enterprise was $248. and some of the others were $400-$500.

Dave,

I've had good luck on O'ahu and Maui with Priceline. Last spring it was 13$ per day. I've gotten 11$ per day on occasion as well.
