Local plant show 2009

Recommended Posts

THere is a local plant show this coming weekend. Its being held by the Horticultural society so its all types of plants.

I was in the area so I deided to pass by. THere is usually a display with booths of the different plant clubs to showcase their stuff but they were still setting up so I couldn't go in that area just to see what was going on.

Some of the commercial booths were already set up though-- and sometimes they put on a display to rival the formal exhibits. Couldn't really buy anything yet though but there were a few interesting plants I already spotted that I had to come back for.

Here are some shots I was able to take.

More to come when/if I get to go back when the show is formally open.

Variegated Rhapis - a really big clump and some encephalartos Ferox-- really big specimens.

We don't get a wide variety of cycads over here.

Another mutant fern-- this variety is informally called the Cobra

Another unusual plant that I like-- Psilotum Nudum. These are fern allies that really look primitive. Pretty impressive if you have a big specimen like the one they had on display. The smaller oned on teh bottom are the ones that are for sale

Aloes!! These are just appearing here locally so I still don't know how they will do in our local humid and a lot of times wet climate. Still a bit pricey so I don't want to risk trying it out and eventually killing it.

Pretty interesting forms though-- can anyone ID the large leggy one??

THis aloe was part of the formal exhibit-- nice!!!

One of my favorite plants but I unfortunately have the habit of killing off---Allocasia Cuprea. This specimen was huge!! the largest leaf was probably over a foot from top to bottom.

These do dormant and don't like being watered when they do else they rot.

My hand for scale. I am not as skillful with the shoe as some other frum members are.

Gene,

I always enjoy looking at pictures of plants at these kind of plant shows and sales. I especially love the Aglaonemas. We just were in a trade show this weekend, and saw all of these same varieties shown as well, that are now coming in from Thailand. And their not going to be cheap either. Thanks,

Jeff

The Variagated Dwarf Buddha Belly bamboo (Bambusa vulgaris 'Wamin Striata') is one of the most beautiful bamboos there are. It is small by bamboo standards (16 ft. max), a clumper, and survives to 30F........I would like to have one.

The infamous Anthurium Superbum. THere was acraze for this particular species last year. I think somebody posted that it was going for over $3000 on ebay. It sort of drove the prices of Anthuriums here to unnatural levels.

Compared to last year's asking prices-- these were relatively reasonable. The ones in the picture are $70 -- and you could probably haggle it down a bit.
