Hi All

Just thought I would post these pics of the 2 H.Beguinii I have planted in June this year . I bought them in a local nursery as for what they called them (chocolate palms)!!

They would have been getting confused probably with Pinanga Maculata for the brown/chocolate coloured trunk. They were in say equiv of 16 inch pots.

I live here in the Philippines and the humidity is quite high for most of the year except the coming few months March to May.

The 2 palms seem to be growing well but have been battered by the latest strong winds. I was surprised the leaves were not ripped off actually.post-2946-1229857397_thumb.jpg

any signs of sun burn?

I have one and I have it in a pot so I can move it around till I get it right. Since I bought it , I have only had it under a net. I recently moved it but it is protected from the strong afternoon sun.

I always thought that it couldn't take full sun because of the substance of the leaf does not look so tough. But it looks like you have yours pretty well exposed. By the looks of it I guess I hould be more worried about the wind :o

Hi Gene

Yes I was a bit shocked too that they took the full sun so well, but actually the nursery from where I bought them from had them in half day sun. They were a bit starved of nutrients/water being pot bound for some time. No signs of sun burn as yet!! the leaves are like leather.I planted these in August this year and have grown 5 inches of trunk already. I have had a coconut fall and land in the middle of one of them but only broke off 1 leaf. They have had 3 flower spikes but havent set seed yet, maybe they are still adjusting.?

Maybe yours could be introduced slowly, better in the wet season really when the humidity is higher. Don't forget we have that nasty time of the year coming up March to May>get out the hose Gene!post-2946-1229898577_thumb.jpg

THis is my one and only H. Benguinii.

As you can see this one is pretty young and hardly has any trunk yet. No signs of buring but I will still probably position it in a place with a bot of canopy overhead.

In it current location - it still get protection from teh sun on teh hottest parts of the day.

I am actually looking for a couple more probabaly so I can plant them in groups. Where did you get yours ? Any noteworthy nurseries in Batangas?

Have you seen, maybe overthere, the entire leaf form of this palm? It's really unique and pretty hard to come by.

Jeff - Not from my end. These are not common here to begin with - but maybe its readily available from Philpalms neck of the woods.

Do you sometimes get whole leaf palms from the seeds of split leaf palms or is it a totally (genetically) separate variey?

Gene,

I'm not sure where the entire leaf form originated from. I guess it would have come from seed off the normal split leaf form. But.....I sure can't wait until mine starts seeding.

I bought these 2 palms in Laguna. They had them in the full sun just about totally pot bound. Dont know how old they are? I bought them for 500 pesos each only!! Thats about just under $10 each Jeff in US dollars. I havent seen any more there but I will keep an eye out of course Gene and let you know if I happen to find some I will buy them and keep them in the nursery for you if you want till we meet someday!!

Interesting you say Jeff an entire leaf form!! I have many inflorescences on the way from both of the palms 2 of them opened/flowered but dropped them.??

Any advice on that one guys? love to get seed off them. Maybe they are just establishing after being in those pots for so long>dont know???

Hi Jerry,

Just came across your post. Chocolate palm is supposedly Areca laosensis, a clumping palm with chocolate colored trunk. What is chocolate about the two palms you bought? I think this is another manifestation of creative name-calling by aggressive plant-sellers!
