OK, so I know many people in SoCal bought Heterospathe glauca from Jeff (or growers that grew them up from him) hoping they would do well here. I am not sure many have tried this in the ground for fear of death. The plant is beachin so it would be a killer plant if it grows here.

Any who, I was at my buddy ______'s house and I looked and in the ground was Heterospathe glauca that has made it through one winter and started its second. It looked great and was still small. He also had some in pots he grew from 4" seedlings. He told me these have survived under his shade cloth, unprotected from the last two crappy winters here. I thought this was good news and figured I would share. Sorry, no pictures, too busy trying to beat him down on a Ceratozamia whitelockiana I found!

Oh yeah, _____ lives in Vista and has a good microclimate.

Happy growdins,

I'm glad to hear that _______'s palm is doing so well, I'll have to stop by and see it. I know its on my way to Escondido. :D

Len,

Jesse at JM talked me into one of these about two years ago and I'm glad he did. I later picked up a few more from Jeff Marcus and all have grown great. The one I got from Jungle music has made it through one winter and actually grew through the cold. Its getting planted in the spring. Here is an old pic (I'll try to get a more current one) showing the nice bronze new leaf.

Nick, from what I saw of your area, it should do well. I was stoked to see someone have it in the ground and actually have it look good because this is a nice looking plant as you know.

Rusty actually told me to buy it.

I purchased a good sized five gallon one a few months ago. It has been outside on the coast for at least one winter and possibly more. It looks absolutely perfect. The leaves are all a dark green with out a spot on them. Seems to be a great palm for SoCal. Aaron

I got mine from Jeff marcus and it was so big I put it right into a citrus tall container. It made it through last winter in my shade house without a spot and is about 3 ft. tall now! I am going to plant it this next spring. I also planted Heterospathe Intermedia this year in Hawaii and it opens a beautifull burgandy leaf. Not sure if it will grow here though.

Thanks Len and Paul, Yeah it's headed for terra firma this spring and I'm not even worried about it making it through winter :) . This species seems pretty cold hardy. What other Heterospathes do you think will make it in So Cal?

I thought I just had a weak one. Mine is very wobbly and I have it staked in the pot. I am also thinking they might be able to take a little sun. Mine is on the east side of my house and is getting several hours of morning sun (just fall and winter sun so far) with no signs of any burn. Aaron

I bought a nice 5g from Jungle Music and it was wobbly and has stayed that way for two years even though it has grown a ton and fattened up. I bought a huge one gallon from Jeff Marcus bare rooted and it took a little while to root in but now its solid as a rock. Weird!

Nick, Mine I got from Jeff is not wobbly either. I suspect they may want a deeper pot as evidenced by the roots coming out of the bottom of my citrus tall which has the depth of a 15 gal.

Len,

Well, once again you Cali guys are forcing me to plant another palm specie in the ground here that I didn't intend on doing for awhile. I can't let you guys up us one, so I will be sure to get planting this weekend. :) You guys will try and grow anything outhere just to try to keep us with us here.

That Dypsis is sweet. Slow growing but unique. I wonder if it will lose the black mealy bug markings as it gets older? I guess we will find out.

I remember Jeff M. telling me there was some uncertainty about the true ID of this palm. After reading Riffle/Craft's Encyclopedia, I can see why. H. glauca is described as not having a true crownshaft. Looking at the pics I posted above, I am not sure how you could say that palm doesn't have a true crownshaft.

Apparently Dypsis don't have the market cornered on mysteries.

Next time you are at Jeff's, ask him if it is being renamed. I am pretty sure it is since it can't be a Heterospathe due to the crownshaft. Well, unless you change the description of Heterospathe to include fully crownshafted palms too.

.... and I could be wrong.... :)
