Back from Nevis Visit

Featured Replies

Just wanted to thank all the board members for their outstanding advice a couple months back. Just returned from Nevis, and the acre lot with 4 cottages is starting to take shape. The landscaper "found" me a second Bismarck, only a ft tall, but what the heck, for his price of nothing I can't beat that.

I was able to take in about 20 cuban palm seedlings, and all 5 seed packets. Amazing, the seed packets didn't do anything while here in delaware for 2 months ... and over there they started to all germinate in 10 days or less. Humidity and heat...obviously the answer. I replanted the cubans in gallon containers, put them under the stairs of one cottage for some sun protection, and we'll see what the landscaper does with them over the next year.

My 12 foxtails haven't done much at all, still about 18 ". But they will certainly catch. Anyone dare reckon to say how long it will take them to get to 15 ft or so in the tropics?

My canary palms are doing fine; the 4 travelers palms are almost 10 ft (planted in Feb 08 at 2 ft), and the 8 ft Xmas palm is exploding. My Acea palm varieties are now about 2 ft; started in Feb as mere seedlings so we are looking for some beautiful clumps of 10-15 fts in a couple years.

Now, I need to take in some red sealing wax palm seedlings on my next venture.

Also had a chance to have customs allow me to import soem black ebony bamboo roots. Planted them far from the cottages but they could be a wonderful addition if they catch.

So, thanks again for all your advice.

PS: Wanted to collect all kinds of seeds down at the Four Seasons for board members, but the resort was closed til next April due to Omar hurricane damage (which was extensive, obviously) so it will have to wait til next trip. Guards were everywhere!

PSS: What am I doing back here in delaware in this miserable weather when I can be planting palms in Nevis? I wish I knew that answer.

There used to be a retired North West Airline pilot and his wife who lived on Nevis. I can't remember their names but I remember they attended a biennial meeting once. I'm sure there is one great palm collection somewhere on Nevis.

Yep, the place is called the Palmarium, about a mile from me. He has a great variety ... but alas, he died a few years ago and the place has been sold.

Jon,

Hello. I just found this topic today, and I know not many people know probably where Nevis is, let alone know someone on this tiny island.

I have a friend, Paul Richnow that lives there, he's a landscape designer and collects palms and is actually an IPS member from there. Do you know him? He also spends some time at his other home in Fort lauderdale and pops by on ocassion when in town.

Reviving this ancient thread:

The private palm collection started by the pilot is again going to be open for tours and is a luxury venue and vacation rental.

It is an impressive website and the palms on site are very thorough documented.

@Jon Stolson I just sent you a message. Looking for anyone else on Nevis?
