We took some friends from Europe to a visit to the Açude do Prata and the Zoo in Recife two weeks ago. Here are some pictures of the Palms there:

Mauritia flexuosa at the Açude do Prata:

Gileno,

I just love those Buritis. Do they make vinho de buriti drink like here in Amazonas?

Gileno, awesome photos, especially those of the Burito palm.

Seeing the pictures of the seeds a question comes to my mind: what's the trick for germinating Mauritia flexuosa. I think I tried twice (seeds kindly sent by you) but never succeeded despite trying several methods. Does the seed looses its viability very soon?

Obrigado, Jan

continental climate somewhat moderated by the influence of the mediterranean sea, atlantic ocean and north sea water masses but still prone to arctic blasts from the east as well as hot and dry summers. pushing the limits is exciting.

Hi Jan, long time since I've heard from you. How are the other palms doing? Sorry to hear about the Mauritia seeds...maybe I can get you a few sprouted ones this season... Still living in Nalbrezie Mladeze?

Don,

No Buriti wine production around here that I know of...In fact these palms are not very common in our region, only ocasionally seen at a few river banks. They make some sort of marmalade with the ripe fruit but I'm not a great fan of it, I'll tell ya. No comparison with delicious guava and açaí...how does the wine taste? unforgettable hangovers?

I put them in deep pots, and they seem to germinate better than the ones in the spagnum in plastic bags...

Thank you, Ari. I've tried deep pots but didn't work for me. I might take up Gileno's offer of sending me sprouted seeds.

Gileno, we've already had a number of freezes down to -2C so all the tender stuff is in the house (greenhouse won't be up before next summer) and the hardy stuff is shivering with cold :D Let's hope for another mild winter. We've already moved to the new house but don't have the street number yet, so the old postal address is fine if you have any goodies for me. Will e-mail you what seeds I have to exchange.

Take care, Jan

Gileno, as always the photos are terrific. Are the tall palms in post #12 Roystonea oleracea?

No one cares about your current yard temperature 🙃

Who need glossy pages when the photos are this good? Truly inspiring.
