Hyophorbe verschaffeltii seeds.

How long does it usually take to germinate a batch of these? NEWBIE here, so this'll be my 'intro to germination' phase. Hopefully I can take on the challenge! :)

Beings the weathers cooling. I may want a heat mat?

THanks to all.

...nobody 'round here grows the SpindlePalm?

Ray,

I germinated some a few years ago, but don't recall all the details. I germinated them in community pots outside during the summer and think that most germinated within two months. I've germinated other seeds inside on a heat mat during the winter.

How are you doing yours?

I sprouted a batch this summer and got about 50% germination from 100 seeds. They should all sprout from fresh within 3 months, and I only had about five latecomers. They are fairly fast in gaining height, then slow up as the seedling stem begins to fill out.

Hello!

I had seeds of H. verschaffelti water in 3 days, then spent a bag (with wet soil).

I do not know how a seed was to stop at another plant in a pot and germinated.

Now I have in the greenhouse. Already has the third leaf.

Regards.

ThankYou all. Glad to see others are growing aswell.

Nice Permit BTW Kathryn. :)

I am doing the heat pad thing. Week three so far... They're in a plastic ziplock baggie with cococoir/perlite mix.

I'd like to get some of those 'seedling' type trays.

They look ideal. thanks for the pic.

I'll update per germination...

Thanks again.

Hi John, thanks for showing a picture of your Spindle palm seedlings. I live in Guatemala and brought a bunch of seeds back with me from Miami, and, unfortunately, I did not properly identify them. Now I have many seedlings, including the hyophorbe v, and can´t tell you how much I appreciated your pics. Peter

Hi Peter,

Identifying each others palms is a big part of what goes on here. Welcome to PalmTalk!

...and how are they now?

Is this the current photo? or has nothing much changed?

The seedlings in the first photo are four months old. This is another batch that are nearer eleven months to a year old. Five-leafers as opposed to two. Both photos were taken in the last few days.

I know this reply my come a little late but. In my experiences I found the more seed the better. They like to be almost piled on top of each other. Just like if they where to fall off the seed pod into a little mound on the floor.

I put the seed in a community flat really thick, (say 1/4 in. And put very little soil on top. Keep moist but not too moist. I Have gotten almost 90% germination maybe more.
