Hi all,

Just wondering who has tried cinnamon as a fungicide? Apparently, it works great as a preventative measure against damping-off, - even kills on plants already affected by the fungus. Might be something to try on my next seed batch.

Cheers,

That's funny, I just read about using cinnamon today. Supposedly it works and smells nice as well. My organic bug spray contains cinnamon oil in it.

Palms are life, the rest is details.

I just googled natural fungicides and cinnamon came up as one. The I googled cinnamon as fungicide and apparently lots of people know about it which is very sad because had I known this I would've saved many a seedling. Even Martha Stewart knew about it and she was locked up! Apparently it also works on crown rot for orchids- I hope it works on palms too!

My roommate and I use it as a preventive when we divide orchids. It works in that situation, and would probably work well for someone separating a palm clump.

I checked my spice rack, and found a full bottle of powdered cinnamon. I'll be sprinkling it everywhere, and even eating the stuff. It's supposed to be good for you. Nice thread.

Makes it smell good too. :) I've used it on orchids myself.

Also a quick effective coagulator when you cut yourself. :hmm:

The Scientist in me loves an experiment, so I went out and got a small container of ground cinnamon today.

I've got a few seeds I'm trying to germinate in Coconut Coir that are ripe with little white strands between them (but not in the coir). So I gave them a very gentle dusting a few hours ago to see what the results are.

I shall report back here over the next couple days of observation.

Two days and no additional fungish growth has been detected. However, also no reduction, though it could be dead fibers at this point.

Bonus, Cham. microspadix and Geonoma interupta are both showing signs of germination after only 2 weeks in the coir.
