Fall here means lots of migratory birds passing through. This weekend I will clean and rehab the bird feeders, both seed and liquid feeders for the hummingbirds. Feeders get little to no use by birds during the summer months as there is too much natural food available. But from now to late spring, they will be busy and with all kinds of birds that we don't see often.

So, what does fall mean to you? What are you doing at this particular time of year?

Fall means mullet, sardine, and bluefish runs, super late season dorado, early season tuner, and the beginning of sailfish season... oh, and the nights get into the 70's by the end of fall! :D Palms slow down from supersonic growth speed, and the little green parrots begin to disappear.

Forgot there are fishermen on board here. Yes, this is prime season here for Speckled Trout and Redfish in the marsh. Action will be super hot from now till first hard freeze chases the bait out of the shallow waters. A limit of 25 Specs and 5 Reds is to be expected. Bonus of Black Drum, Tripletail, White Trout, Flounder, and whatever is often encountered as well. This is time to fill the freezer with fish.

Fall in Cincinnati means Oktoberfest, and football, mostly college and high school because we all know the bengals aren't worth a darn. It also means no more parties along the riverfront every Wednesday and that we have to watch other baseball teams play for the World Series and laugh at the cubbies when they lose in the playoffs again.

To me it just means that I'm even colder than I am during the summer.

We don't really have Fall as a season over here but at this time of the year - the rains stop, it gets pleasantly cooler and Christmas Carols are occassionally playing in radio stations and shopping malls (since September 1 actually-- never fails)

When I lived in Pennsylvania, Fall meant it was time for apple cider and spiced wafers. Every October I would buy a gallon of apple cider and a box of Sweetzel's Spiced Wafers - delicious! And of course the trees changed into a riot of colors - with different shades of yellow, gold, orange and red.

When I lived in the Tampa Bay area, Fall meant less humid days and cooler nights.....and the dreaded arrival of the snowbirds!

In Costa Rica, Fall just means rain, rain, and more rain! October is our rainest month of the year.

It is actually spring here. But, that does not really mean much. I gues though you could call it fall as it is a period here where the equatorial summer slides into the equatorial winter. The river is at it's lowest level of the year and the fish are running along the river banks. I used to enjoy fall a lot in Montana. It was bird hunting time. I am getting mentally ready to spend the month of December in Montana this year. It would be nice to experience a good snow storm again.

I was on vacation this past week and the weather was lovely! Today is defintely a fall day. Lots of warblers are in our yard now. Buntings are hanging around as are the hummingbirds. We visited a man-made wetland loaded with water birds, including a female black-bellied whistling duck with her 2 babies. They aren't even supposed to be in Florida! Also visited Loxahatchie Wildlife Refuge. It was really sad to see all the dead bromeliads. The Mexican bromeliad weevil is devastating the native species here. Very sad.

Got a lot of work done in the yard - planted 3 more Veitchias along the drive, completely redid my front pond area (took out the liner and all!), planted more buttonwoods, cypress trees, lots of other stuff. And now I have 5 Archontophoenix purpereas to plant amongst 5 dreadlock crotons. Will get started on that tomorrow. Love the weather!

I cleaned, made minor repairs, and filled the bird feeders yesterday. The birds had already found them by this morning, which is much faster than normal. Perhaps it is the much cooler weather coming in later tonight. That usually brings in the migrating birds.

If it wasn't for the calendar on the wall telling me it is Autumn (Fall), I'd not know much difference. Oh yeah I guess our days are a few minutes shorter now and maybe one degree cooler in the early morning before the sun comes out but it's all not really enough to be real noteworthy. Essentially it's still pretty much summertime here for us. Next month (December) can bring some cooler early morning lows but even then as soon as the sun comes out it warms up quickly. Basically we only have two seasons here, summer and winter and my guess is that what we call winter would probably be more like summer for many of you living in continental climates.

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

Winter is coming.

First the raptors have arrived. All sizes and all kinds of hawk are showing up in increasing numbers.

New are the swifts or swallows. I am not sure, but the skies are filled with hundreds of them every evening. I don't know if they are coming, or fixing to go, or just stopping over for a snack, but their presence cannot go unnoticed.

It is so cool to go outside right now.
