Actor Paul Newman passed Friday at the age of 83 and the world lost a consummate professional.Somehow this Gentleman was able to bring what you knew was really "him" to a role without overplaying it.My personal favorites were Tennesee Williams "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" with Big-Daddy/Burl Ives and a hot Liz Taylor(at the time),Hud,Cool Hand Luke(personal favorite),Butch Cassidy and Sundance,Sting and The Road to Perdition. His style stood the test of time as he was good young, middle and old.In that regard, atleast two obvious examples were the Swing films of "The Hustler"(Jackie Gleason/Newman) to remake(Newman/Cruise) as well as Tin Roof/Burl Ives to tough Irish Mobster.

Newman was able to sucessfully extract himself from the Hollywood conundrum with a long time marriage to Joanne Woodward. He had a great family life, great hobbies(24 Hour Daytona Team Winner) and was a great philanthropist.

It's sad but he enjoyed a great life. My favorite movie was "The Sting."

"Hud", and "The Hustler" were his best roles.

"Cool Hand Luke" was the best movie he was in.

IMHO.

Great role model for young Hollywood. They could stand to learn a thing or twelve.

When I was a kid I used dream of being Paul Newman.

For mine, "Cool Hand Luke" and "Somebody up there likes me" are my greatest memories of Butch Cassidy.

And he had one heck of a salad dressing recipe too.

But seriously, he played a major role in mainstreaming "organic" too.

So very true! He was an amazing individual. Selfless. Not caught up in the drama of the world, but in having an impact and making a difference. He truly lived a life of purpose.

I saw him for the first time in "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" at the drive-in at the tender age of 9. I fell head over heels in love with him and never fell out! Those eyes - oh, those eyes!

A great actor and wonderful individual. He really helped the organic cause along.

By the way, it was a double feature at the drive-in. The other movie was "Old Yeller". All 6 kids and my parents were crammed in the pickup at the drive-in. Those were the days. The older kids sat on benches up front.

When I was little, all the kids used to wear their PJ's to the drive in. Some would lay on pillows on the

car roofs, but most of the kids would run down to the playground they had set up in front of the screen

and play on the swing sets, etc. they had set up down there. I'm talking scores of kids. I don't remember

any adults being there either. When the movie was over, people just started tapping their car horns and

all the kids new to make their way back to their cars. Can you even imagine such a thing these days????

A VERY FITTING QUOTE from HUD

hommer bannon:"maybe risk starting and epidemic?" (in refrence to sick cattle)

Hud Bannon: "This country is run on epidemics, where you been? epidemics of big business price fixing, crooked t.v. shows, income tax finagling souped up expense accounts, How many men honest you know?

why you seperate saints from sinners youd be lucky to end up with Abe Lincoln, now I want outta this spread what i put into it, and I say lets dip our bread into some of that gravy while it's hot!!"

Hommer Bannon:" your an unprincipled young man Hud"

Hud bannon:" Dont let that fuss you none you got enough for both of us!"

I read somewhere that Paul Newman took the role of Hud because it was so anti good guy compared to most of his other movies, and then it turned on him when everybody ended up liking the character of Hud Bannon it was not what he had intended.

I have to say that Paul was before my time, but I have seen Cool Hand Luke, and it was a great movie. Other than that he made a mean salad dressing. I am sure from the comments on this board he was quite the "decent celebrity" we could use nowadays.

I met Paul a couple of times in the mid 70's at Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania. He approached me in the pits to ask about my car. When I looked up and saw who it was I almost @#$$% my pants. Not an actor now, a very normal, nice guy who just wanted to run his Datsuns 510 & 240Z & talk racing. In fact the name on his cars was just his initials PLN! I got some pics somewhere, gotta find em!

I also saw Paul in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof at the tender age of 10. I recall I had a fever and didn't watch too much of the movie (my mom wanted to see the movie and took me along).

As a 13 year old (1961) I saw The Hustler, and of course, fast Eddie's pool prowess impressed me. In 1967, while in the U.S Navy I saw Cool Hand Luke. For me, that is my favorite movie starring Paul Newman.

When CHL comes on TV I normally watch it, and then have to listen to my wife say: you are watching CHL again!???
