The first of spring, photo's of garden

As its the first week of spring I have removed the portable hothouse, lipstick looks like winter never happened as did the grandis.

I expect we will get some nights of 8C to 10C in the next couple of weeks but that should be it till next winter. This winter has been the coldest and longest for many years and I did lose one of my palms which was the Gronophyllum pinangoides. The betel nut has quite abit of black spotting but still managed to push out acouple of frons. The coconut also took a beating with considerable black spotting. Both of these palms are now exposed to the cold winters winds due to there size, over 30feet. I also did a garden make over for those of you that remember the old look.

Cheers

Mike

You've got some amazing stuff there Mike. It all looks great.

My Dwarf Malay has pushed maybe 30cm of spear over winter, and is almost finished opening up a new leaf. I'm not taking the cover off it yet, and next year it will be protected but not totally covered because it will be way too big by then.

Our winter was weird. Wet at first then totally dry. When it was dry it was cold at night, about 1.5C below average, but the days were about 1.5C above average. My little Carpoxylon is just opening it's new leaf now. It pushed a spear all winter. It's at the 6 leaf stage. I'll have to go around and post pics.

Best regards

Tyrone

Nice garden, looks like a nice sunny place to hang out in. I noticed the house in one of the photos was raised off the ground, is this typical where you live?

Most of the older homes in Hilo are raised for air flow and moisture considerations.

How are you coming along with your solar project anyway?

The last few days we have had lots of rain about 2inches and now very cold winds from the west, strong winds. With the rains the winds were easterly coming off the ocean and warm but now westerly and cold, for a time I thought I was in the tropics but now it feels like Iam in the arctic. Such a change in just a few hours. Palms took a beating as did most of my plants. Time for another beer.

Tim,

This is actually more typical Queensland home, more than NSW...(Mike correct me if I am wrong). It is designed that way for air flow. If you remember seeing Wal's house, it is semi elevated too.

A lot of houses in Darwin are actually elevated too for this reason. I would have one too, if I have spare $50,000 - as I would love to have proper elevated with legal height downstairs, instead of semi elevated.

Regards, Ari :)

I love the old Queenslanders. So full of character those old homes. I reckon they'd work fine over here.

Mike, did you put the cover back over your Lipstick when the cold came? I was wondering how you're going, as you had that low pressure zone sitting off the coast. Did you get that 170mm of rain yesterday?

Best regards

Tyrone

House's along the river are build on stilts because of the flood prone area we are in. But as Ari states, it also allows air flow under the house and helps keep it cooler in hot weather, good in summer not so good in winter.

Tyrone I havent replaced the hothouse over the lipstick, I was temped last night to do just that but couldnt be bothered and I dont think it will be any worth off due to one or two nights of 7 or 8C temps, after all it did withstand one night at 5C during winter without any ill effect. Also it wasnt getting the full blast from the cold wind which helps in keeping the wind chill factor abit higher.

One thing I will add is that the lipstick is supprisingly more cold tolerant and drought tolerant than one might expect. This palm has not been watered from the last weeks of May till now. The ground is now saturated so this will be another test of its sensitivities. It may well keel over and die but Iam betting on the odds that it will show no ill effect from a short period of cold wet feet. Fingers crossed!

Cheers

The older homes in South Louisiana are raised about that height as well to accomodate the hot humid summers.

That garden looks great too.

Hi Wal

The palms do look abit naked but I was after more light for my solar panels. I just couldn't removed them after all these years. By the way how did your Verschaffeltia splendida handle the winter? My lipstick has taken a beating in the last few days with night temps going as low as 5C on one occasion.

Cheers

Looking good Mike, PM me I have something for you.

The older homes here on O`ahu were all built off the ground. Now all the subdivisions have homes on slabs of concrete. Mine (50 years old) is about 2 feet off on one side and about 6' on the other as the ground slopes downhill. I love it like that. I can crawl under and run wires anyplace I want to. Same for the water pipes.

Hi Don, yes it is a Beccariophoenix, I have four in all. I started planting palms around 1990 with the coconut being one of the first. Here is a picture of the coconut after all these years, it looks its best just before winter when this photo was taken last May.

Took some pics while I was installing a canope irragation system in my rainforest. On those hot summer days its nice to walk through the garden listening to some good music, beer in hand and a cool mist of water settling on your back.
