I keep hearing there are Jubaeas in El Paso, but have never seen any details or photos. Anybody have more info on them?

Hey Martin, I don't know where they are located at in El Paso but I remember I had collected a couple of shots from a previous post or forum... see pics below. Jv

JV, thanks! I heard somewhere there was at least one mature one there that survived the 80's freezes. I always thought it would be bigger than the two you have photos of.

I think the one in the 2nd photo is the one I came across. My sister used to live in EP before they moved to Arizona. I first visited about 10 years ago and spotted it, it was in front of a real estate office. I made her turn the around and went and saw it. Its grown a bit since then.

My sister lived off I-10 on the east side, near Zaragosa and Joe Battle Blvd. I want to say it was somewhere along Montwood Dr. in that area.

Eric,

I tried to find it on MS Virtual Earth, but didn't see it along Montwood in that area.

I found both of them on MS Virtual Earth finally. The first photo is of the one on O'Keefe Drive. It is the 2nd house south of Darwood Drive across from Mission Hills Park. The other tree is on the north side of Montwood Drive just east of Wegewood at Cardon Real Estate, 10105 Montwood Drive. Unfortunately even using the tightest zoom on the Bird's Eye view you still can't see much detail. I've gotten a much better view of some big Jubaeas in San Jose, CA that way.

The Jubaea I use as my avatar continues to do well, and has twice as much CT now.  The others were all damaged by -20F wind chills on the side of their trunks facing the NE winds in the 2011 freeze, and the rot eventually spread deeply into the trunks killing them.  The surviving one was still booted nearly to the ground at the time, and only has a small area right above the ground that was damaged.  Now it has about 7' of bare trunk, and I plan to wrap it if we have a similar freeze in the future.

How did your brahea and other palms make out after the 2010 winter? I saw a few updates in another of your older posts but was curious how they did after two additional cold winters.

Wow that sounds so brutal..... almost as bad as some of my extreme zone stretching attempts!

I'm guessing these palms were planted during an extreme mild spell, got some mass on the trunks which retains heat during cold spells.ie its own heat sink.

I'm thinking that maybe wrapping the trunk with simple black landscape material will allow it to absorb additional heat during daylight hours.

The winters since then have been relatively mild though we did briefly get down to 10F 2 years ago.  The 10F wiped out most of my Phoenix except the CIDP's, but everything else did fine.  Braheas are some of the cold hardiest palms in existence, and the published cold hardiness data is wildly inaccurate for most of them.  Brahea armata puts pure W. filiferas to shame.  They were defoliated at 10F, the armata was unscathed.

I've never seen or heard of either armata nor trithrinax campestris being defoliated by the cold. Both are extremely cold hardy and it's a shame they aren't used more, and is something I'd like to try and change. I have a few of both at relatives house in s.e. nm and Oklahoma to see what their limits really are.

Trithrinax campestris is tough as nails.  I planted one outside as a single leaf 1 gallon and have seen it completely covered in snow and ice without damage.  It laughed at 10F.

What about T. acanthacoma.  Pretty tough too, I hear.

Keith, I can't say for sure yet. I have two 10g going outside in their permanent location in the spring along with a 6ft CT from California that i purchased last month. I hope to gain more cold tolerance info on anthacoma to see if it is viable long term here.

It survived until the February freeze and has more than 10' CT now, but has not grown any new fronds yet.  However, it also is not rotten yet, so I'm hopeful it will grow next spring.  I have several palms that don't appear to be dead, but have not grown new fronds yet or just started growing in the last few months.  Hoping for a mild winter this year, which it has been thus far.

I saw the one at the Dallas Aquarium this spring. The top had fallen off, so I wonder what became of it. They brought in coconuts and planted nearby. Who would guess the best coconuts in Texas outside are in Dallas now! Its been a warm fall! BY the time i press save they will be hit by a cold front and be dead.

Mine had been doing really well prior to the freeze.  Hadn't been defoliated since 2011 even though we have gotten down to 10F multiple times.

I was searching for more Texas threads and came across this. Does anyone know what happened to mjff? It appears this is his last post and he hasn't logged in since then. Looks like in a post above he was trying a lot of interesting palms and he had a nursery license.

I believe he comes and goes from here as far as posting. I’ve looked through his posts in the past, there is definitely some interesting info. Not sure what you are looking for but it sounded like he got hit hard in 2021 and lost some of rarer(for Texas) palms

Yeah I figured it was the freeze too. Idk just curiosity I suppose, I've been digging around a lot of old threads and I've sort of noticed a lot of the people from Texas dropped off after that freeze. It's a shame too, since it looked like OP and Texas Cold Hardy Palms had a lot of interesting hard to find hardy palms for sale, which are now almost impossible to find out here.

I'm always curious too what survived that crazy freeze, San Angelo can get pretty cold from what I understand. I don't think Jubaea really stand a chance down here, let alone that far north, but you never know with some protection.
