Also, lets not forget to mention that under, Discussing Palm Trees Worldwide, the "Palm Exchange" is a good place to watch out for palm seeds for sale. You never know what one person might list here.

I PREFER ORTANIQUE

Hi,

I also had a look at ORTANIQUE ,but aren't they more expensive than RPS?

And especially for me,cause i'm from The Netherlands :winkie:

Correct me if i'm wrong.

Richard

I have good experiences with Ortanique and Rare Palm Seeds (RPS).

If you are from the netherlands maybe it's a + for RPS to order from them, because if you order from Ortanique you will pay just for shipping 15$ (i think, anyway i paid that much for a small box of seeds, don't know how much is for envelope), while RPS has included postage in their prices.

But for me freshness is the most important, so i would buy from the one who at the moment when i need them has fresh seeds (new).

Thanks Pivi.

I also had a look at RPS,this seems to be a good company for me to buy my seeds from.

But more info about buying seeds is always welcome.

i just edited my post above. I think FRESH is the key when buying seeds. Look for NEW tag next to seeds you buy.

I agree with you,Freshness is very important to have success with your seeds.

But also the price difference is quite important to me.

And from what I saw is RPS much cheaper than ORTANIQUE.

Hello,

It seems that ORTANIQUE and RPS are the 2 most used sources to buy your seeds.

Are there people here who also use other sources to buy their seeds?

Thanks

As said before check the for sale section. Here you will find seeds that are FRESH. Who knows how long RSP and ORTANIQUE have had them stored. Not saying anything bad about seeds from RSP (Tobias) or ORTANIQUE (Joseph).

I have a few for sale that are still hanging on the plam. Now that is fresh. Of course I'm a long way from Europe, but jets fly pretty fast.

Hi,

I am looking for palms who can survive the Dutch winters.

Like the Trachies,Butia,Brahea,etc etc

It's always better to get seeds from a person who pick them from the trees, but difficult to find those persons.

Anyway, you always need some luck if you buy seeds from companies like Ortanique and/or RPS.

Hi richard,

I'm only a "seed" in this forum, so my information could not be so good.

Take a look at this palm Trachycarpus Fortunei http://www.rarepalmseeds.com/shop/TraFor.shtml

Thank you all for your help.

Best regards,

Paulo Fonseca

Normally in the end of Februari and the beginning of march there are a load of fresh Trachycarpus seeds from palmtrees that are growing in the netherlands for years. Even wagnerianus looks like to get more and more into the gardens and giving seeds.

Likewise on Ortanique.

Dypsis seeds purchased from Rarepalmseeds.com came in obviously old, with no reply when I emailed about the lack of quality.

Thanks for your help,

I can only agree with what has been said here. FRESH is the number one concern. The best source to find currently fresh seeds is on this site here in the palm exchange forum. As Steve said 'fresh off the tree' you can't do better than that.

I have had good results in germination with Ortanique. Most everything Jo and Mini have sent me has been quality...my green house is full of their seedlings now.

rarepalmseeds.com is a well constructed site with top quality information and images on each species. But my bottom line experience with them is after hundreds of dollars of seed purchases: not one of them has germinated. This is in southern california Spring/Summer season with the aid of a greenhouse, 2 growing racks, heating lamps, filing, water soaks, and heat lamps. Rps(rarepalmseeds.com) have all the species I want to collect in seed but.... if the seeds are 4 year old dead chunks of wood what dose it matter. Also, I have spoken with others with similar experiences.

A good tip to follow with these sites is look for the word 'new' added next to the species. Both rps and ortanique do this on their sites. Also, rps sends out an email news letter a couple times a year of all their recently obtained seeds so you can know which ones are fresh.

Good luck. Never stop trying.

My experience from rarepalmseeds is excellent, having 90% germination on all species ordered and always with some extras of the smaller seeded species... :) From what i remember, the seeds werent listed as new when i bought them...
