There's a couple of really nice Phoenix dactylifera over by my grandma's house so I decided to stop and take a look at them. They flank the driveway and one was a male and one was a female with almost ripe dates. I picked a few and munched on them on the drive home. As I ate, I noticed that instead of a seed in the middle like I expected, there was just this little nubbin' thing that crunched in my mouth. It wanted to be a seed but just wasn't. Here's some pics. Is this a sign that this is closely related to the cultivars that are grown for eating? I've picked dates before and they usually have very long, prominent seeds.

Hey Matty,

I have had the same thing happen to me w/ a Date palm that is close to where i live. I dried the "seed" out and sowed them and low and behold they germinated!!! I put them on top of my refrigerator for about a month to dry and BINGO!!! Try it!

I've seen this before as well and have always contributed it to the seed falling prematurely from the tree. In areas other than true desert regions, this may occur due to weather related conditions, i.e. being to wet or moist. Jv

I have heard that it does not get hot enough for the seed to devlope out here.

In coastal San Diego County (southern California), female date palms (Phoenix dactylifera) produce parthenocarpic fruits without pollination. The fruits contain rudimentary, seedless endocarps, but nontheless are edible. The unpollinated fruits of P. dactylifera are smaller and contain less sugar and pulp compared with commercial pollinated dates. (...) Date palms such as this are planted in the parking areas of shopping centers in San Diego County.

Well, the large Phoenix planted along Bancroft Blvd. in Spring Valley all produce delicious dates and have huge seeds. Remember when Paul and I did that pictorial?

I was wondering, can all date palms seed be eaten or just certain ones? Do some taste better then others.

MK, only those in the dactylifera species are edible. Seeds from canary island date, sylvestris and the such don't produce an 'edible' date. There are a number of dactylifera varieties (200+) producing an ample variety of date flavors within the species. JV
