I heard Nicole Kidman had her baby today. Her name is Sunday Rose. Why do celebrities name their children such outrageous names that they think are so cute? What they don't consider is will these names fit when these kids eventually become adults.

People do what they do. I remember Moon and Dweezil being the first that got my attention a loooooong time ago.

I always thought the same thing about names like Brittany.

"It's so pretty . . . "

"Yeah, and if she gets fat we'll call her France. Really fat, we'll call her The Continent . . . . "

I really like some of those names, although there are others I really don't. Either way I definitely prefer unusual names, I just don't think a really common name gives a good sense of identity. There seems little point to me in having a name, if it's the same as everyone else's.

Just for the record my kids names are:

Zailin Kane (addressed as Kane)

Zen Khan

Zamira Kajal

Whether people like the names or not, we did at least put a lot of thought and effort into finding and deciding the names. Neither my wife or I are Christians, so we didn't see the point in using Christian names. There was also a reason for giving them all the initials Z.K. We didn't want them to be addressed as Z.K. Lucas-Divers. After putting so much effort into choosing their names, we wanted to encourage people to use their names, so by giving them the same initials, the only way to distinguish between them, in writing, is to use their full names.

I seem to recall John Cougar Mellancamp gave his son a rather bizarre name.

Gee Wiz. Don't you have some palms to plant? I can't believe you spent this much time looking all that up and then typing the list.

That said, who the hell are most of those people on the list? Famous? Never heard of them!

Why people spend time worrying about "stars" and what they do w/their lives is beyond me. Who the hell cares if Christy Brinkly gets divorced? Isn't there some "real" new to report like maybe how things in Iraq are getting better? Like how the surge is working. How much gas is costing? Why the stupid democrats don't let the oil companies drill where ever the hell the oil is?

RANT AND RAVE! Sorry I'm having trouble falling asleep and am "bitchy" tonight. It's 12:43 a.m. and I can't sleep...... :rage:

I don't have a problem with singular, first names being unusual, such as Zak - as in Zak Starkey, for example.

Moon Juice Dunkin' Donut III for president anyone?

I've always found naming practises very interesting. From your list above, "ATherton" might well be a surname in one of the parent's families. A common practise in 18th and 19th century naming in Anglo-Saxon families was to name a child with the mother's maiden name as either his given name, of if female as a middle name.

There was a proscribed order in some cultures for naming children, especially Irish and Scottish immigrants to this country. I used to know th eorder but I've quit doing genealogy so I've forgottn it now, but it was something like the first son was named for the father's father, 2nd for the mother's father, 3rd after the father himself additional sons were named in a particular order from there using family names, and girls were named the same way in order of birth.

A peculiarity of American naming during the early years of getting this country going was people naming their children after states, like Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Texiana, Virginia, or even cities like Philadelphia, or the whole country, America. Boys were named after war heroes of the time, like Robert E. Lee. So a celeb naming a child 'Ireland', 'Liberty', 'London', 'Memphis' or 'Brooklyn' is just a modern extension of that.

My husband had a distant ancestor named Julius Caeser Hall. I had one in my family named Mirabeau Bonaparte Lamar Strickland.

The celeb who named her daughter Gaia maybe is expressing a hope that the child will grow up and there will still be a world to grow up in, Gaia being related to the Mother, the planet. Who knows?

We named our daughter Ariel because we liked it. I had read "The Bell Jar" by Sylvia Plath and my husband and I had always loved "The Tempest" by Shakespeare both of which feature Ariel's. It should be noted that my daughter was born BEFORE Disney's "The Little Mermaid" came out, but still, when we would tell people her name as a toddler, they'd say "HOW CUTE you named her for the Little Mermaid", to which we'd say, "NO, we named her for the Sea Sprite in Shakespeare's "The Tempest" even though that Ariel was a boy"

Her middle name was my mother's. Jeannienne.

Don't worry, if these kid's names don't fit them later they will just legally change them anyway.

Naming practices change over time. Names from the 1890's sound pretty strange today, probably strange enough to be interesting again. How many 20-something girls named Ashley do you know? Previously it was considered a boy's name. I can forgive parents for being a little self-absorbed at the time their children are born. It is a big deal if you are the one having the baby. Some of those names are fine. Ok, so maybe I wouldn't choose Moon Unit, but I'm not as creative as Frank Zappa.

I'm SORRY again for bitching early this morning. I just don't give to many S _ _ _ S about actors other than their performance.

Getting to name of people we KNOW or KNEW:

My daughters both have Hawaiian middle names which is pretty much the practice here in the islands for people of all races.

My oldest born on Christmas Day is Kris Kilihuneo`kuahiwi

the Hawaiian name refers to the Mist Laden Wind From the Mountains which comes down our valley quite often.

Number two is Amy Kapua`anapa`kualaula

The flower that shines with the light of early morning.

I had a great-great-great Aunt back in Germany named Anna and I wanted to name #2 after her.

Jewish people use to and perhaps still do name a child after a family member that has passed on. If of the opposite sex they just use the first letter of the name. I'm Steven after an Aunt named Sophie. That is my middle name which was used growing up in Brooklyn. My first name is Ludwig (who was born in Germany) which my folks thought would be a problem in the Jewish neighborhood we lived in. Mom was Jewish born in the USA, Dad a non-practicing Catholic. Now that was a combination when they got married in the mid 1930's in New York City.
